One big thing that will help us - hope Ghana and Portugal draw eachother and lose to Germany.
Definitely agree with this...

We have to beat Ghana, that's a given.
What's the fandom like for Portgual in Brazil? I mean, it was basically a Portugese colony for 300 years.
Hopefully Germany gets sick.

It's nice the US has Germany third. Hopefully Germany gets 6 points in their first two matches and doesn't gaf against the US.

The only way this would be true is if all other games not involving Germany to this point ended in ties, leaving the US with 2 points, Germany with 6, and Portugal and Ghana with 1 point heading into that final match.
That guarantees Germany wins the group. A win by any team in the in the US/Ghana or US/Portugal game means Germany could still finish second. Germany won't chance that and would definitely GAF about the US game.

If Ghana were to get malaria, they would've gotten it by now

Not exactly.
Germany beats Portugal and Ghana. 6 points.
US beats Ghana and draws Portugal. 4 points.
Portugal loses to Germany and draws US. 1 point.
Ghana loses to US and Germany. 0 points.
Germany could play for a draw in their last match against the US. It happens all the time.

I do guess we're kind of lucky, one of our hardest games in the group.... and we have their former coach... not to mention the guy who mentored their current head coach.

you're right, if they have already taken 6 points and look to be through, then we could be facing a weaker team. that said, a "weaker" german team is really anything but weak.
i still like our chances to get through this group.

In the first round of games, we need two things to happen.
We beat Ghana (by two or more goals would be ideal).
Germany destroys Portugal.
I think the most likely way we advance is with a 1-1-1 record and a better goal differential than Portugal.
Playing Germany last is also a good thing. They could very well have the top spot clinched, meaning they won't have a ton of motivation to kill us.
