What are the realistic scenarios for the US to advance to the knockout stage?

Beat Ghana and tie either Germany or Portugal?

It seems like we would need at minimum 4 points in the Group to advance.

Win all the games.

But otherwise, I really think we'd need to beat Ghana and tie both. Can we beat Ghana by a bigger score line than Portugal?

Beat Ghana, draw Portugal, draw/lose to Germany. Hope Germany beats both Portugal and Ghana. Advance with 4 or 5 points, possibly on GD.

We will likely be up against Portugal for the second spot, so we absolutely have to get a result against them. This is our most-likely path through:

USA defeats Ghana
Germany defeats Portugal

USA ties Portugal
Germany Defeats Ghana (Germany through, Ghana eliminated)

Germany ties/defeats USA
Portugal defeats Ghana

*If we lose to Germany in this scenario, we would have to have goal difference on Portugal.

We have to beat Ghana. Then get results against Portugal and Germany. It can be done, but it will be super hard.

Ghana is the game that matters.

Fail to win that game, and you can turn out the lights and start the bus.

The good news is that given Australia's group - it's going to be really hard for us to finish last overall like in 1998. Costa Rica saved our arse in from it in 2006.

That shite doesn't run in eight year cycles, does it?

Uh... Portugal and US play each other in the second game. We can't both win that game

Sadly, so far it does. We are still looking to break our Awesome-Suck alternation that's been going on since before the internet

1990 - First round exit
1994 - Sweet Sixteen
1998 - First round exit
2002 - Elite Eight
2006 - First round exit
2010 - Sweet Sixteen
2014 - ????

Yea, I messed up on my chart. the top row was going to be US PORT GHANA GERM and going down the side was US PORT GHANA GERM. There was not proper spacing so the - which would indicate no game is not lined up. also as you pointed out I messed up the order.

It's a 4x4 table where the first column is each teams result against USA, second Portugal, etc. It's not the results for each team in order played

We beat Ghana, that's a must. Then draw Portugal, also basically a must. If we do that a lot of scenarios can play out in our favor. A draw against Germany would then give us 5 points, which almost always gets you through to the second round. We could lose a close game, 1-0, to Germany and advance on goal differential if they beat the other teams by more than one goal. Or we could hope that Ghana loses to us and Germany but then draws or beats Portugal, leaving both teams below 4 points.

One big thing that will help us - hope Ghana and Portugal draw eachother and lose to Germany.
