USL announces plans to start new league that would rival MLS
Here we go.
Will USL bring pro/reg.
They didn’t drop out of US Open Cup like MLS.
Join the dark side!

Is there a demand for this? The market cannot support this. Dumb idea.

It only (potentially) works if they institute pro/rel immediately.
That's the only thing they have over the MLS if they do so. It's a risk for sure because even then, I'm not sure that's enough to grab longterm attention of fans. Definitely banking on soccer getting a boost post-World Cup like MLS did after 1994.

They also don’t make up financial rules as they go.
And are not all owned by us soccer.

Also, tv deal with espn.
MLS on apple HAD to hurt ratings this season.

They may run into a situation with current team owners in that they may not want to deal with potential relegation with their investments. But hopefully enough sign on and we get something worth paying attention to.
The ESPN/CBS deals can't hurt either.

Maybe, but the only way this has a prayer of a chance is if they utilize pro/rel, if not, then it's just the same thing as MLS only 30 years later and with less of a major market reach.
There has to be a selling point to this beyond "hey, we're a new top tier league".

Selling points:
-More accessible on ESPN/ABC
-Actually play in US Open Cup and aren’t afraid of competition.
-no changing of financial rules on a whim (yet)
-all the teams aren’t named something-something-something FC
-not all forced to use same brand for jerseys
-not all owned by same entity

And last year too
No one watches other than Messi and that buzz has been gone for a while

Charleston Battery with a badass logo.
I’d try and watch the USL if they can get on any kind of regular tv. The MLS putting most of their games behind a paywall subscription service is such a pain in the arse.

Football is for everyone
MLS unfortunately doesn’t see it that way

They played a good bit on CBS Sports last season, including even a few matches plus the championship game on the main CBS network.
I believe they're supposed to show even more this year in addition to ESPN/2/+

I watched numerous games on ESPN+ last year.

Every game that isn't on CBSSN is on ESPN+.
It's a fun league and the talent level is better than most would expect. Still, this is such a risk and it could blow up in the league's face.
They tried this on the women's side with the USL Super League being a D1 league to directly compete with NWSL, but it's clearly not on the same level from a talent, media and marketing standpoint.

The ESPN/CBS deals can't hurt either.
They should offer teams for two price tiers… a higher price that guarantees they’ll never be relegated and a lower price that enables it
I mean what does relegation really do for a league? “Let’s kick out Los Angeles and add Reno” said no league ever
And they might not like MLS for being American but it’s the established brand now. It’s like starting up a second NFL and we know how that historically works out

Speaking of USL, anyone here have some inside knowledge re: USL Nola? Did that whole thing fall apart for sure?

USL continues to stay in the news with Birmingham Legion just now announcing Chris Richards as an investor.
