I wouldn’t say finishing first is completely irrelevant considering our current spot in the FIFA rankings. We need all the Ws and points possible because we’d get put in Pot A of the World Cup draw if we finished top 8 in the final fifa rankings prior to the draw. We’re #13 right now so probably a longshot anyway.

Sure, but you don't get any added FIFA rankings points by finishing first. However finishing first would mean we won a lot of games, which could backdoor us in Pot A if some UEFA results fall our way (probably won't happen though).
As things stand right now, I'd rather us and Mexico just pull away from the rest of the pack and then we can settle first place when we play them.
