3 million American kids play soccer. I’m pretty sure that’s more than any other country in the world. Participation isn’t the problem.
It's a developmental problem. We have made strides but still a long way to go

3 million play, but at what age or level. Most are pre school kids playing ymca or I9. How much does it drop off for boys especially as they get to an age of real skills development and more intense training. How many are playing recreational soccer vs true high quality developmental soccer when compared to these smaller nations.

I’m not smart enough to know this, but could the argument be made that the US (and Mexico) have made soccer too expensive for kids?
So there are a lot of people who could be really good later in life but get priced out of it early? Vs. other countries who don’t charge a gazillion dollars.

Absolutely. Tennis is the same way. Look at someone like Djokovic, he had zero money but bjs federation took care of him. That never would happen in America unless he was black. Just the truth on how the USTA takes care of juniors

Oh there is certainly a financial barrier to entry. Baseball is getting that way as well.

Please tell me how I'm being obtuse here when the guy's argument is "In my high school, the best athletes didn't play soccer"?
Posted on 7/2/24 at 8:32 am to Broski
I would say maybe 0.1% of American high schools have the actual best athlete playing soccer
Once again I’ll do tennis. I was a top 50 American tennis u18 prospect in the entire country
Likely had 25-50 better pure athletes at my high school alone than me
Soccer will be the same case overall. We would dominate the frick out of tennis on the world stage if we put our best athletes there. I’m talking it would look like golf. May not always have the individual best, but we would have over half the top 100 easy

Because the good players have already been ID'd and are in a youth academy.
For example, none of the guys that were on the field yesterday, except for Tim Ream, played high school soccer.
Pretty much every major tournament we are one of the faster and more physical sides. Athleticism isn't the problem, it's corralling that athleticism and giving it the proper training at a formative age to maximize it that's the problem.

Just own it. It’s a pure easy to identify fact. Our top athletes don’t play soccer. Not a single rational human would argue otherwise.

Jesus Christ, this is a terrible take.
He'd be one of the fastest dudes there. That's an athlete baw.
Pulisic at 16 was playing in the Bundesliga and holding his own against grown arse men. Why weren't all those dudes at Catholic picked up by Germany?

I'm not getting into this whole athlete debate for the millionth time. I will just summarize our team is fast enough physically but too slow of thought

Consistently retarded takes.

Exactly, that's where the youth development comes in.

Yes he is fast and yes he is athletic
But watch this. He was a 2017 grad. Go to the Google machine and Catholic had someone run a 10.79 100m in 2017. Yeh, Christian isn’t the fastest….

Lebron couldn't run a 10.79 100m in high school, so I guess our best athletes aren't playing basketball either.

At 16, he was one of the faster players in the league.

Sure the top players are not high school players. But it is a trickle down effect. We have a very small amount of top athletes in comparison to other countries who are identified at a young age and go to the academies. And we have a number of guys who are foreign born or even grew up in foreign countries, who are our best 11. Better than it was in the past when our entire team was German born.
Maybe as our immigrant population continues to grow, soccer will be more dominant. Idk.
It last night it seemed our best athletes were foreign, maybe other than pulisic. Jedi. Flo. Musah grew up mostly in Europe.
I did t see anyone else that was some superior athlete then what Little old Uruguay had.
