Where in previous Olympic cycles this might mean something, this go around it doesn’t. This generation here has already been buried on the depth chart by the U23s that make up our senior team. So in previous cycles when we were looking at Olympic qualifying to see who might replace some of the older players, that’s not the case this time. We brought on U23s from the bench this morning against NI that would have been the best players on the field against Honduras. Let’s not freak out about this result.

can’t believe Atlanta refused to release players for this tournament so that they could play in the shitty fricking CONCACAF champions league

I can

Bc people and clubs don’t respect Olympic football

MLS is putting their interest first, they don’t see the befit in letting players go for making a tournament that they don’t see befitting their players

It is what it is

Which players did they refuse to release? I haven’t followed MLS much in a while

George Bello, Miles Robinson, and Brooks Lennon.

I still don't think AUFC has forgiven US Soccer for getting Miles injured after a game.

100%. It sucks not to make the olympics, but the current reality is at most 1 or 2 of these players will be capable of making a meaningful senior team 23 man roster in their careers. And even if we had qualified, very few, if any, of our better U23 players would have been released by clubs in order to play.

So unlike prior cycles, I don’t think we’ll suffer from not qualifying. Our good U23s will be playing Nations League and Gold Cups and are already playing against good competition in Europe.

To me, this is all about pride and it sucks.

This doesn’t suck as much as past failures because it’s not like this was going to be an assessment of possible first team players. But it still sucks because I love rooting on America in international competition and I think we would have fielded a decent team.

This. It’s the Olympics and they are fun. It’s a low pressure showcase and once again we are out. It sucks for the fans of US Soccer.

I think what sucks about missing out the most is that for as talented as our main core is, these guys haven't really played together and it sounded like we were going to try and bring many of those guys to the Olympics, which would've been a great test for them ahead of WCQ's.

Now, I feel like we have to bring a strong squad to the Gold Cup, but the competition they'll get there outside of Mexico won't be as good as the U-23's team they would've faced in Tokyo.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but we have to win Nations League in a few months now. Our players need to win something just to get belief back in the program again.

I dunno if the big clubs would have signed off on that especially with playing the nations league and gold cup

That’s a frick ton of matches

It’s a shite situation bc of our region

But most the teams in the Olympics would not be better than what we would face in the gold cup once out the group stages and not playing vacation destinations

I mean, the same group wouldn't have played in all the matches. Had we made the Olympics, Gregg basically said that the Gold Cup would pretty much be MLS-only. We now may not have that luxury.

And Nations league is just two matches in the June international window.

Yes they would, we slept walk through the last Gold Cup which was the "A-Team year" Gold Cup until the final with Mexico.

Oh I agree with y’all it sucks not to make it. Just this time it doesn’t also come with the fear that our youth system is arse.

Only thing I’m taking away from this tournament is that Kreis belongs nowhere near the national team

It's because we had a bunch of American born players without accents on the pitch, Randy.

It’s nothing to stress out about

But more of a reality check that the depth of players from these MLS academies still isn’t there yet once we get past the standouts.

We didn’t look very good last gold cup

Still the senior sides of Costa Rica, Canada, Jamaica etc are better than a majority of teams in the Olympics

Especially some nations B/C youth teams

Well no shite those vacation countries suck balls, I know you can read. I said after the group stages.

But you really think an u-23 side that isn’t even the best one a nation can put out is better than Costa Rica’s full national team

Do you not remember how much we fricking sucked in the last Gold Cup and still made it to the finals without an issue.

Give me Italy and South Korea's U-23's over Curacao and Panama any day.

Yes it was terrible to watch

Watching our best u-23s who play on the full national team beating an Italian u-23 B squad doesn’t tell us much
