when they win today they will have the same amount of titles as spain in the last 6 years. they will have split the world cups, and split the euros. the difference is Pirlo was injured in the world cup, and dont kid urself, that is a huge difference. u can say what u want to about the greatest players in the world, but it all comes down to winning tournaments. and if italy win today, he will be a huge part, and show that he is one of the best of all time in winning major competitions. we all talk about great players, but in a tournament full of them, he has been the biggest game-changer

Spain should dominate, but they'll play 2-8-0 keepaway instead. Penalty kicks here we come!

His absence was also the reason Spain managed to advance on Italy on pens in '08. If he played, surely Italy would have progressed.

Hopefully it doesn't go to kicks and history continues. Like Germany, Spain have never beaten Italy in real tournament play.

Forza Italia!!!

Whatever happens let's just pray Spain don't go up 1-0 in the first half. Will be the most boring Euro Final ever.

Your post is bad, and you should feel bad.

And yes I understand the connotations of your use of the word "real", and yes I think that this is still idiotic.

Why should I feel bad? Spain have never beaten Italy in a Euro or World Cup game.

So the 2008 quarterfinals don't count.

Should I disregard all the times England have lost on penalties.

HELL YEAH ENGLAND DIDN'T LOSE TO GERMANY IN 1990, 96, AND PORTUGAL IN 2006!

Matches that end in draws are officially considered draws even if one team advances on pks but, I agree that it doesn't matter much when one team is advancing and another going home.

I'm sure Spain would be happy to advance as Champions on pks today.

By the way, Spain did beat Italy 1-0 in the 1920 Olympics.

However, the point about Spain either being the considered the greatest national team ever by many or simply in a dead heat with Italy over the past 6 years just based on the outcome of this one match is pretty interesting.

yes, the context of my post was it to be decided in normal time where the winner has always been Italy.

This is more of a semantics argument at this point, as my sarcastic post suggests. It basically suggests that penalties are separate entity from a match, which is a bit ridiculous considering that they ultimately determine the victor.

I think it's flawed though considering this would be Spain's third straight in a four year span, and Italy's second in a six year span. A victory Italy would be similar to Germany's victories in World Cup 1990 and Euro 1996. There were some holdovers from both teams (Klinsmann and Matthaus etc. for Germany, Pirlo and Buffon etc. for Italy). This Spanish team's core is the same outside of the Puyol and Villa injuries prior to this tournament. Only auxiliary players have changed for Spain during this span.

I do agree that Spain's performance the past 4 years has been more impressive for the reasons you mention.

I'm not arguing that Italy's run would be anywhere near as impressive as three straight. However, there would be little "greatest" NT ever talk if they end up losing to Italy today and that Italy would have split trophies with them over the past 2 EURO's and WC as well as having a better head to head performance would make it even more of a stretch.
