Jordan and Algeria will be playing for advancement next match.
Expect entertainment

Expect absolutely 0 entertainment from Jordan who will get smoked by Argentina and is practically eliminated.

Algeria/ Austria will be a fun game.

It sounds like they’re doing the expanded Copa again in 2028. It may become a permanent fixture in the alternative even years to mirror the Euros, which would be a much needed addition to the U.S. in-between World Cup schedule.

My main complaint is that it has sort of killed my interest in the USMNT in between World Cups. It will be practically impossible for us not to qualify (it was very difficult before, but there was still enough reason to be glued to qualifiers). I know we have the Gold Cup, but the WC Qualifiers were way more interesting than the Gold Cup has ever ben.

How many spots does Concacaf get now? Before I believe it was 3 auto and 4th place had a play-in against Oceania region?

I just looked it up earlier today. If I read it right, we get 6 auto and 2 that go to a playoff with other federations.

Yikes. That is wayyy too many for our shitty region. Should have been four auto and two qualifiers.

I have liked how it has played out match to match so far - definitely has kept this second and third set of games more interesting than in the past.

Two major downsides I see:
1. Almost none of the big dogs are at serious peril of missing the knock outs except I guess Uruguay.

2. Qualifying isn’t nearly as fun, both for CONCACAF and other confederations, as others have mentioned.

It’s a trade off.

Overall, yes, I think advancing the slight majority of #3 seeds has been a positive. But the combination of removal of GD as the primary tiebreaker in favor of H2H (which I’m generally fine with) combined with group winners being locked into certain matches will make for some boring match #3 of the group stages.

I still think a straight #1-32 bracket with 1-12 the group winners by pts and GD, #13-24 the group #2 by pts and GD, and #25-32 the top 8 group #3 would both be the best way to enhance excitement throughout the entire group stage and be the most fair/most “rewarding” to the top group stage teams. If you get a rematch in the round of 32 or 16, so be it.

Perhaps you’d need to take a 4-day break of no matches between the final group stage match and the first knockout stage match to guarantee each team gets at least 4 days rest (and no more than 7) but I think it’d make the entire group stage better.

Just wait until Japan and Sweden both try to throw 2nd place in Group F so they don't have to face Brazil next round.

This was always going to be our destiny after how much money we made CONMEBOL hosting last time. The annual rotation should be

Nations League or Gold Cup (pick 1 + retire the other)
Copa America
Nations League or Gold Cup
World Cup

And after how we/South America has looked this Cup? With expanded VAR application? I want a piece of them regularly. We’d go deep in a Copa held this year
