ATTENTION EVERYONE WHO HATES HOW AMERICAN SOCCER FANS CHEER:
No one is putting a fricking gun to your head to watch soccer. The OP asked a question but continued to try to prove a point after people gave him an answer. Americans cheer they way they do at soccer games because its the best and most fun way to do so. Heaven forbid we do something like another country. No need to reinvent the wheel cause its not "American enough" (whatever the frick this even means).

You don't know what you are talking about... the terms fan and supporter are used interchangeably in Britain too...
Sure supporter is more common, but people say fan a fair amount... And I doubt they are starting threads on message boards about it..

Your right, I mean I have never ever heard singing at a college football game. The fans never belch out "Calling Baton Rouge" in Tiger Stadium. The band never plays songs that the students have chants to.

If we were truly mimicking fans from overseas, there would be more deaths. Our fanbase would be more economically diverse, and we wouldn't be allowed to wear team colors in bars on gameday because of the threat of violence.

Exactly. I'm not sure how its "not American" for the crowd to sing the national anthem. Especially since it sounds infinitely better.

I don't know that I completely disagree with OP's premise, though I think his phrasing and/or positioning is poor.
There are a *LOT* of folks who attend US games and "follow" the team that really aren't that plugged in, and generally don't know their arse from a hole in the ground.
The guys in front of me last night couldn't remember the name of "the guy with the nappy dreads", and their belligerent tactical analysis was a little lacking.
But they were decked out in jerseys, flags and US bandanas.
You'll see that bandwagon mentality in any rapidly expanding fanbase. Fans of LSU football and the Saints for longer than the last ten years can relate. You'll see something similar with LSU basketball and the Pelicans soon, I think. US games can be/are the "it" sporting event to attend for an under 25 male right now. Nature of the beast, I suppose.
