I still haven't quite processed it. I never thought this would happen in my worst nightmares.

It wouldn't be that bad, Bc we fricking suck and most of the players don't deserve to make a WC...but it just sucks with Pulisic. Dude gave it his all, he deserves a chance to play on that stage

This. I went to my first one in 2010 & was hooked ever since. This really sucks. I was looking forward to inviting some of my friends next summer knowing they'd be all in after going. What a setback for the US to grow the sport.

went for a long rage run last night around midnight. couldn't sleep i was so mad/crushed. this track was on repeat

finally fell asleep at around 6am. fml.

I did that after Landon was inexplicably left off the 2014 World Cup roster. I was so flustered and melting on TD that I got up on and went for a rage run.

Honestly, that 2014 decision by Jurgen killed a part of my sporting heart that will never come back.

I am disappointed now, but I am sure it will bother me more next summer. I honestly had trouble engaging with this cycle when Jurgen was in charge.

Somehow that seemed like a bigger meltdown on here than last night.

Sure, last night had more threads and discussion, but there was just a lot of dread.

The Landon decision set off some by god WARS on here.

I'm really bummed we didn't make it. I'm even more bummed that a bunch of people aren't going to watch a tournament that has a ton of storylines and great teams.

The last few World Cups I've had a lot of friends/acquaintances that came up to me saying the World Cup hooked them and they wanted to follow the sport more closely. They started following a club team. They started getting excited about guys in our youth setup. They thought it was incredible that guys like Muller or Forlan performed at such a high level on the biggest stage.

I'm going to miss that this year. I'm going to hate that people will not watch Iceland. It's going to suck that many people I know aren't going to see if Messi can deliver a major title for his country. France and Germany are mega-talented. Brazil ripped everyone apart in qualifying. I just hate that people aren't going to be invested in 2018. It's sad.

Eight years. It's going to be 8 years between seeing us in a World Cup. Assuming we even qualify for 2022, which isn't a given. That's such a long time. That's about 1/9 of the average persons life.

That's going from carefree college kid to fricking married with a mortgage and kids...and no US World Cup. This blows

The time frame is what makes it such a tough pill to swallow for me. There's nothing else to really relate it to in sports. For LSU fans, this seems like losing to Troy and then packing up the program until 2022 while holding a scrimmage against MAC opponents every few months until the games count again.

I can't find an analogy with club soccer, because even with relegation you're competing 3 months later to earn your way back. 4 fricking years. That's a long time.

Yeah, I think a lot of us were too shocked to post, and I do not really post much in game threads anymore.

I was more upset over the Landon thing because Jurgen voluntarily chose to be a fricktard.

At least with this, we were at least trying to do the right thing (get a point) I guess...

To me, an inexplicable decision seems worse than a result because it was within our control. Either way, team Landon won the war.

I got to watch the 2014 WC party at watch parties, packed bars in the US, and on Copacabana Beach. That was so freaking cool. This is gonna suck.

Maybe what happened to Rangers? Getting booted down several leagues?

I'm crushed right now, I can't imagine how bad this summer is going to suck.

A USMNT player is the first thing I ever wanted to be. I remember staying up late/waking up early to watch games in 2002 - this was before I even knew what I was watching, really. All I knew is that I wanted to be Landon Donovan.

Years went by and it became a staple of the biggest summers of my life - high school graduation, college graduation, etc. - this was going to be my 30th birthday/World Cup summer.

Knowing that I'm about to miss out on all that anticipation and hope and watch parties and unbridled, unapologetic patriotism hurts bad, but what really hurts is knowing that there are kids out there who don't get to watch their version of a Landon Donovan this summer.

I'm sick over it.

Nothing touches this feeling. No Bama loss comes close. And I was there 1/9/2012.

Just thinking about the difference in time between last World Cup and the potential of us being in Quatar 2022 has made me extremely depressed. My wife and I watched John Brooks head in the game winning header at a beach bar on our honeymoon. If we make it in 2022, I will have a 5 year old and very likely another kid. That just seems like so much time.

The prospects of all my other teams makes this pretty bad as well. I only latched onto the Astros in the last couple of years after moving to Houston. My mood perked a little bit last night when I thought about Will Wade and LSU basketball. That's how bad my teams are. I was excited about watching a team in which making the NIT is a successful season.

Great post. You are four years older than me, and you hit the nail on the head.

I fell in love during the 2010 WC and Landon instantly became one of my favorite athletes ever. It sucks that there are so many kids/young adults that will not get to fall in love next summer.
