Wynalda put it perfectly on counter attack earlier.
Gregggg looks like a scientist that has spent 2+ years designing and building a rocket, but now that it's reached the launch pad it won't fire. He sounds tired and defeated, but worst of all stubborn and out of ideas.

We will resort to the ol' American way in the WC of just working hard and hustling with hopes of getting a result. England is going to feast especially Kane and Sterling.

It’s a sad day when in order for our team to have success, they have to play in-spite of their coach.

Let’s be honest, gregggg doesn’t have enough self-awareness (stubbornness because we’re all idiots) to make an adjustment, get the right players into the right positions to play into their strengths, and admit he needs to change.
And he’s already said it in nuance, “trust my system, it’s about having the right starting personnel, and that’s hampered by injuries.”
He’s banking on their return and his system will shine! :/

His rigidity/total inflexibility with regards to his system is so frustrating to watch. Damn, honestly the last ten years as a fan have kind of sucked. I just want someone like bunker Bob to come in again and see us play a style where the sum of the whole is greater than the individual parts. Is that too much to ask?

His “system” is so bad and so flawed it’s truly amazing that he doesn’t seem to realize it. He’s the definition of incompetence.

Just watched the post game comments by gregggg. Couple of things to note:
Also according to gregggg, and this is no joke, CP sprinted off the field to the bench so that the sub could get on the field faster. Because he coaches urgency and we wanted a goal. I’m not lying. That’s what he said.

This thread gave me a boner thinking it was a new thread celebrating the firing of Gregg.

Say what you want about Bob, but that was the last American team that had style. We had some slick moves under JK, but my god the energy, the spirit, the playing players in mostly the right position in an actual system that made sense given the players available. I want it back.
I will believe to my dying breath that if Charlie Davies didn't get in that accident, we would have made it to the semi-finals of WC 2010.

but my god the energy, the spirit,
if we’ve lost this as a prerequisite, then we should just go ahead and fold the program. American soccer fans will put up with a lot, but if the last two matches are “50%”, they better bust out of the gates in november at “150%” or the casuals will stop watching. frick I might stop watching

Davies car accident
Onyewu torn patellar tendon
Jermaine Jones some leg bone issue
Imagine if we had all three of those healthy.
That Davies Jozy two forward tandem with Donovan and Clint behind them in the empty bucket was so fun to watch at times.

Please. You're breaking me heart.

Looking back, it was insanely fun to watch. It was better than long periods of the JK tenure and most of Gregg's tenure as well.

Given the players at his disposal, their individual ability, their youth, etc, it seems like at least it would be more fun to watch. That’s my perception, at least, with casual observation.
We have seen flashes from some of these players, though, in very big spots in CONCACAF, so I am still holding out hope that on the big stage they will shine.
Doesn’t erase the disappointment I feel in these players for not playing with intensity and effort every time they put on the shirt, IF that’s what is going on.

On a technical level, yes, but we just don't know what we are doing right now.
Bob-Ball was simple. Move the ball up to Jozy either with his back to goal or on the half-turn in the channels, give Donovan and Dempsey extremely wide leeway to play anyway they feel like, and orient the defensive responsibility around the 'box of four' with the two DMs and the two CBs in close proximity to one another to prevent goalmouth opportunities.

I don't question their intensity and effort, I question Gregg's ability to simplify the system enough to where they can just play, which was the beauty of Bob's system. The latter knew we could out-athlete any team in the world through our strength, stamina and speed, and didn't try to play bigger terms on their terms. That's where I see the energy lacking, because our system doesn't maximize what the US is traditionally good at. The increased technical level, in terms of international play, is just cherry on top, but the way forward (despite how much I dislike it when it is employed by other teams with flashier players) is the low-block, 10 behind the ball, counter-attacking style. Gregg just doesn't have the vision to see things as they are, in my view.

Greggg sees himself as above all that. Remember, he's the smart scientific tactician, and we're just mere mortals.

His record vs countries not in our region is awful
And these are not very good countries either lol

if I were the parent of a player I could do that.
I feel the need not to invest emotionally (hope) because my brain thinks its possible US doesn't even get out of the first round and no part of me expects them to win at quarterfinals vs a top 8 pot team you likely meet in quarterfinals.
last week I watched England possess the ball vs Germany within 20 yards for a long time.
deft passing. on the attack.
I've never seen a USA team do that. ever.
I've seen several teams do it in world cup play.
they will be there in quarterfinals.
I'm glad you can still hope.

I'm bumping this win, lose, or tie.
These subs and playing not to lose when all Iran needs is 1 goal to advance is a firable offense.
