Grabbing someone's shoulder isn't making a play on the ball. That would still be a red card, even if it leads to a penalty.

I've been a USSF certified referee for the better part of 30 years and the contact I saw in the area doesn't rise to the level of DOGSO in the area under IFAB's current interpretation of the LOTG.

I'm certain this clip will be discussed at my recertification get together in a couple of weeks. It's a good teaching clip.

Did he do something with his feet? Because every single thing I've read about the latest rules has said that grabbing and pulling the player is not making a play on the ball.

I'd love to hear how grabbing the shoulder is considered making a play on the ball on the ground.

This feels like a game where Marcos Alonso scores late

I hope he scores. He's such an easy guy to root for.

Strafing for position is literally an act with the intention of playing the ball. Physically losing out in the battle doesn’t change that.

Yeah, the regular muscle injuries are a huge worry. He's got to stay healthy or he's going to get left behind at Chelsea.

The best way I can answer this is that the defender was not reaching out away from his body to grab the player. The players were in close enough proximity to one another that he was within "playing distance" of the ball. IOW, if his arms were fully extended and grabbing at the attacker, a case for DOGSO is easier to make.

Just physically losing the battle isn't a foul. Grabbing the shoulder to slow the player down isn't playing the ball even if your intention is to eventually get to the ball.
