IMO, it makes it seem a little less like the game was decided solely on penalties. At least the team who lost the PKs would have 30 minutes to do about it. I don't know if most people will agree, but I think it's better.

This is possibly one of the worst ideas I've ever read.

I stand by my guns. The replay is the only way to truly decide. But good luck getting teams to agree to that.

You'd frick tournaments timings up. That's not a practical idea.

This works in league tournaments. But replays just aren't feasible in international tournaments of this size.

Back in the old, old days they did it. Even in international competition. I know it's not practical with fixture congestion the problem it already is.

My point is just that is the only fair way. Other than that, play until someone scores.

As impure as it is, the old 90s MLS/NASL run up 8 second penalty shootout is an interesting concept. The keeper doesn't have to come off his line, and the attacking player actually has to be creative in the run up and shoot.

I had only read about this format until the other day. Showed some replay of one on FSC. It's bizarre, but it might be a better way.

Personally I love them I think they are exciting and fun to watch. What say you?

I love it. Players are mentally and physically beat. Real nut-busting pressure. Can lead to epic heroes and/or goats. Topic always great for discussion too.

It's pretty much impossible in tournament settings. At least outside the final. Even then, it could cause a bunch of issues.

I understand they aren't the perfect way to determine a game, but they're certainly exciting.

As far as ridiculous tiebreakers go, I'll take penalties over away goals.

I say golden goal 30 minutes max OT period but both teams have to remove one player every 5 minutes. Still tied then to PK's.

This. I don't know what genius ever came up with the away goals concept but he needs to be cockslapped.

yeah. I think taking players off the field would result in more goals. Maybe just start 9 on 9 in extra time?

No. It's not that bad. You're being dramatic.

Let me play devil's advocate here. What if the wind was blowing 30 mph in the face of a team during first OT? They don't get a chance to use the advantage if the other team capitalizes on it? That doesn't sound fair.

Yeah but then you have already tired players covering even more of the field than they normally would. You would have to have way more subs in ET.

Pks suck. Sure, they are exciting for about two minutes. But otherwise have zero to do with who wins the game. It's like a free throw contest to decide who wins a basketball game.

Look at yesterday in extra time, spain dominated and Portugal was content to let it go to pks.

If there was no pk, Portugal would have had to play more aggresively. There is no "shot to win" by playing it safe.

You should decide the outcome of the game in the same manner as the rest of the game. If they play four four hours, so be it. Fitness is part of the game.

I would probably add another sub for every 30 minutes of extra time.

I think the problem with golden goal is that teams were so afraid of giving up a goal that they were more defensive.

Is there any stat on whether golden goal led to more or less shootouts?

I would like to see them figure out a way for teams alternate corners or free kicks from a designated spot with an additional 10-15 seconds of play in case there is a rebound opportunity.

If you go first and score, other team has to match. If you go first and miss and they make, you lose.
If you both make, go again.
