As I said before, I do want to qualify comfortably, I'm just not too concerned with the final standing.

For example, if we had lost to Costa Rica in the last game of qualifying for 2010, we wouldn't have won the group, but it doesn't mean we were closer to not qualifying.

Agreed. There were four points between first place and a home and home with Uruguay to qualify.

I think the Gold Cup showed us that the margin is still relatively thin.

And as much as people bitched and moaned about "Bunker Bob and his player selection", Ricardo Clark's goal at T&T (expect a draw, +2), Conor Casey's two goals at Honduras (expect a draw, +2), and Bornstein's header to salvage a draw from Costa Rica were those unexpected points. I admire Bob for making some extremely unpopular player selections that made the difference between first and Uruguay.

I'm hopeful that Jurgen follows American soccer as much as they say he does and understands that there are few "gimme" points on the road in CONCACAF.

Wait until it's him, instead of Bob getting screwed by jealous CONCACAF referees.

What if he doesn't finish first in WC qualifying? Win a Gold Cup? Win a World Cup group? Make a Confed Cup final? Beat a #1 ranked team? If he doesn't do ALL of those things, he's "worse than Bradley."

Quick question, confed cup is out the window though rt? Or is there another way to qualify for it?

Yes. Once every four years, summer prior to the World Cup.

I think Bob B got a bad rap. I don't believe we have the talent that we are reported to have by the media. I hope Klinsmann does well but making chicken salad out of chicken shite is a toughie.

Things wrong with Skeletor:

1. Consistent capping of Bornsucko
2. Inability to start a game with a winning strategy (Slovenia, Panama, Ghana)

I don't think there's a leader on the field. Either Bocanegra doesn't organize or can't. Donovan and Dempsey, and I think, Cherundolo are "playing" leaders (i.e. Do As I Do), not vocal leaders. I'm never a big fan of goalkeepers as captains, because they're always yelling.... it's hard to tell when it matters.

So, I'm not removing blame from Bob about the slow starts, but I'm placing the large part of that on the players. I can assure you that the pre-game speeches didn't consist of "just wander around out there for a bit.... if you give the ball away in the center circle... don't sweat it." Come on.

However, Bob has to identify and/or develop a captain, and I think he failed in that regard. I also think that part of the problem toward the end was Michael trying to be that vocal leader, and the rest of the team pushing back on the kid that doesn't play anywhere trying to take over.

You act as though there was loads of talent on the bench. Maybe I am a realist, but I don't see us developing top tier players in the USA. Hell, our best players were trained in Europe. Will Klinsmann change things...I don't think so. Why, he doesn't have much to work with. Our goal should be to win the world cup, but the reality is, it would be a shocker because I for one don't see us having the talent to compete. Unless, of course, you pack and counter.

Well, coaching said chicken shite to play Bob-ball(boom ball). Throughout the whole game doesn't help.

They never really played kick and chase, but thanks for your input.

Really? Did you watch the cup? Time after time the defenders would play the ball from just beyond their own 3rd. They wouldn't switch the fields either, they would just serve it straight down the field hoping someone would be able to magically run a 4.1 and be able to chase it down. Every once in a while they would switch the fields or play it at an angle but very rarely. How do you not remember that happening over and over?

It was more of an opening statement than a question... Seriously though, we did that the whole cup.

I thought that basically every goal we've given up in the past two years has come from a giveaway while we tried to play possession through the midfield.

I could be getting that confused with my Macclesfield Town Manager Mode, though.

LOL Bunker Bob!

I agree but there aren't only those two set ways of attacking.

I can recall very few instances where kick and chase was a specified mode of attack.

Most of the time it was just defenders rushing a clearance.

But, what do I know?

True, but still boom-ball.

We need defenders who are calm on the ball. This is why I like Ream, he doesn't seem so panicky like Gooch often does.

Oh, I agree.

I can't think of many goals in the past few years that were the result of a long ball. (Altidore vs. Turkey, perhaps?.... but even that was a 3 or 4 pass goal.)

Either way, not recognizing the difference between a team that plays possession (pretty poorly, but possession nonetheless) and one that's playing "boom-ball" (LOL Bunker Bob) doesn't encourage me to read more of that tactical analysis.

Either that, or one doesn't know what actual long ball offense is.
