“I am proud and honored to be named the head coach of the U.S. Men’s National Team,” said Klinsmann. “I would like to thank the U.S. Soccer Federation for the opportunity, and I’m excited about the challenge ahead. I am looking forward to bringing the team together for our upcoming match against Mexico and starting on the road toward qualifying for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.”
quote:
U.S. Soccer President Sunil Gulati named Jürgen Klinsmann as head coach of the U.S. Men’s National Team today, making him the 35th coach in the history of the program.
“We are excited to have Jürgen as the head coach of our Men’s National Team,” said Gulati. “He is a highly accomplished player and coach with the experience and knowledge to advance the program. Jürgen has had success in many different areas of the game and we look forward to the leadership he will provide on and off the field.”
U.S. Soccer will hold a press conference in New York on Monday, Aug. 1, to formally introduce Klinsmann. Further details regarding the press conference will be released later today.
Klinsmann’s first match in charge of the U.S. National Team will be against Mexico on Aug. 10 in Philadelphia. Tickets are still available for the match and can be purchased at ussoccer.com. Kickoff is set for 9 p.m. ET and the match will be broadcast live on ESPN2, ESPN3.com and Univision. In addition, Univision will air a live pre-game show beginning at 8:30 p.m. ET.

not the most inspired selection, but i am excited, nonetheless
it will be interesting to see if his first call-ups are any different, provided that all players are eligible to attend

Official: Jürgen Klinsmann is the new coach of the U.S. men’s soccer team. He’ll have more control than any U.S. coach before him.

Well, we get to see him in action relatively soon...like the hire

This is the most pleasing aspect. The downside of this is if he fricks up, it will justify a powergrab by Gulati.

This is awesome. I hope he gets the control that he needs.

I've made my feelings about Klinsmann known in the past. I hope I'm wrong.
I'm 100% on board, though.... because I wasn't given a vote. I don't have a choice.
We'll find out Saturday what our first qualifying draw will look like.

Yes.
And I'm in agreement with sheep, as well.
Funny how Roy Hodgson was barely mentioned.
100% behind Klinsmann, though. Can't wait.

Let's be optimistic together. Hope Alejandro Guido gets a cap soon
That should make some people happy

I hope it didn't cost US Soccer too much to pry him away from his current job.

Until it bites us in the arse.

The upside is for our future, not for our present. I don't think he'll be any worse than Bob. But he may not be better either.
But if he does anything close to what he did with the German youth system, we'll be alright.

@GrantWahl Curious, any interviews over the years with coaches who've said their philosophy is a defensive style of football?

Bunch of morons on the US Soccer page on FB. OMG, we've got some uneducated crack smokers.
We DID forget to mention Hitzfeld.
One astute fan there, however, did mention that Deutschland were a young side in 2006; Klinsmann brought Low on board; and that Bayern were only 3 points out of top spot when he was fired.
I'm a touch more optimistic.
