Messi is undisputedly the greatest footballer since the inception of the sport.

He’s fricking amazing. If he was selfish, he would have 10-20 more goals, easily.

39 years old and has his first hat trick. Just too easy. God has blessed him with unusual skill and ability.

I watched his World Cup debut live. Never imagined I’d find myself here.

He’s the GOAT.

Ronaldo had an argument in 2014, and that’s about it. As far as of all time, Messi is undisputed. What an incredible talent we all got to witness and still get to

Absolutely incredible what he did tonight. He is still just incredible. He will certainly have the record, although Mbappe will break it

It’s unreal what he can do. Old man elevates the play by his precision and execution of the young guns. It’s just cinema.

I'm not going to dispute how great he is, but Mbappe at this moment is even better.

The wild thing is he needed HGH shots as a kid to reach his modest height. Imagine had he not gotten the treatment he needed.

I think his strongest argument would have been around 2018. Passed Messi in Champions Leagues, equal on ballon d’or’s, had the international trophy when Messi did not. To be clear, I would NOT have argued for him over Messi, but this is probably when his argument was strongest.

Can’t say undisputedly, but I don’t hate the argument. You have to take how widely played the sport is into consideration, not just how dominant they were relative to their competition.

I have always advocated for Pelé, and stuck to my guns. Last night changed that.
RIP Edson Arantes do Nascimento, you were THE Man. Rest easy, your title has been handed on.

Actual innocent question here and have only seen still photos, should he have gotten a red card last night? Saw some IG stuff this morning saying no doubt.

I was busy with a lady friend's car battery dying/replacing it.

I think yellow would have been fair. he did catch the guy on the back of the calf with his cleats but both players seemed to be off balance at that point and you could tell he pulled away immediately. It was still pretty obvious preferential treatment though, as he didn't even get a yellow.

No one got preferential treatment. No yellows were given. Algeria’s right back intentionally fouled on two counters, one where he grabbed the Argentine player by the face.

I cannot believe I am going to write this:
I am pleased, thus far from what I have seen (not every match) of the officiating. On the whole, they are "letting them play" as we say over here. They are not tolerating the diving and embellishment to the point where John Strong and Stu mentioned DePaul trying to dive and being ignored more than once.

I watched videos and disagree. I think should have been red. studs up on the calf. People said he was off balance but what I saw wasn't off balance until after.

I am only looking at it in vacuum of that play not in regard to other plays in the game, which sound like they should have been yellows

The other plays should have been yellows, but Messi's was borderline red that got nothing. I'm not sure how you argue he didn't get preferential treatment there.

I agree. The thing that mostly knocks Pele down to me is that he played almost his whole career in Brazil league, turning down big money from the big European leagues until, way past his prime, he went to the Cosmos (America). Unfortunately, in those leagues, he was like a man amongst toddlers.

His skill and competitiveness was undeniable. But the only time he was really tested by real competition was at the World Cup. And that only comes every 4 years.

To do it for this long at the highest level regardless of where he has played will never be duplicated. He is the Goat.
