Here's the thing, though: United aren't going to run a 4-4-2 (thank God), and RVP is a better scorer than Rooney, so he needs to play the lone striker role.
That would move Rooney to the attacking central midfielder role in a 4-2-3-1, but does he want to stay there? The rumors that say he wants to be a striker won't go away.
Even if he does stay there, you're taking Kagawa out of his position. You can put him out wide, but he's proven during his short time at United that he's best in the middle.
Januzaj is playing well at the moment, but what does it say about your other wingers if a teenage kid is outplaying you week after week? Need something there.
Carrick has needed a strong midfield partner for years now. Fellaini, as much as I loved him at Everton and wanted him at United, has not been it.
De Gea is great. But he needs a better defense in front of him. The one he's got right now is too old and inconsistent.
Sure, RVP can mask your problems for a while in league play. I think that's what happened most of last season, hence the title.
But if you're one of the biggest clubs in the world, you need to be going for the UCL trophy. You need to be strong enough to get every trophy you can possibly get. The great all-around teams compete for the big trophy...the Bayerns, the Barcas, the Real Madrids...and United are a long way from that.

The good thing is that a Europa spot is definitely in reach, because a Top 5 finish seems unlikely at this point. Just need to overcome that deficit to Sunderland in the COC.

I don't think it needs to be a one or another option. Rooney and RvP can both play in the hole, or as a lone striker. Forcing them to be tactically rigid makes you lose the best qualities of both. I mean, for most of RvP's career, he's been a deep-lying forward and not a lone striker. He and Rooney can play in a partnership in the 4-2-3-1, but I don't know if Moyes thinks they can.

If Fletcher gets back to where he was in 09/10, he might be the answer. Still not the long term answer, but he's lost three years to illness, so he should be able to go well into his thirties.
I don't things are as bad as they appear at Man U. They have to buy, yes, but this was inevitable. They seemed to target the right sort of player, though they missed on them but they need a lot more reinforcements.

id run the 4-4-2 with the dimond in the mid field
rooney and rvp up top, shinji in the cam, the young wonder boy on the left mid, rotate the right mid and play carrick at cdm

By himself he's world-class. An excellent passer, a calming influence on the offensive end, a great reader of the game. The lack of an appropriate partner isn't his fault. He needs a mobile partner, someone who can press while he sits back, which relieves of him of that burden, and lets him do what he does best. If you're asking him to be a ball-winning midfielder, then you're wasting his talents.

True, but I would personally say that Rooney is better in the hole. But you're right, Moyes has barely played them together.
