maybe it's semantics, but sure looked like they were in a 442 today. I suppose you could call it a 4411.

Carrick can't hold the midfield by himself. Few players can anymore, since lots of teams employ three CM's.
A 4-4-1-1 with the support striker marking the oppositions deep-lying midfielder is the most appropriate formation, with Kagawa cutting in from the left to be the auxiliary striker. It's not like he can't play out wide, as he was fairly effective playing like that for Dortmund, but it's his defensive capabilities that are problematic. He can work in a high pressure system that retains fluidity, but asking him to track back and defend deep, and then create from the left is too much. You can compensate with a more defensive right midfielder, or shading the midfield to the left, or dropping a CDM into the CB position when in offensive positions, a role that would suit a player like Felliani very well.
Moyes needs to tailor his system to the players he has until he can the players he wants.

That's why I don't like him out wide.
But that offset 4-4-2 you're describing that looks like a weird 4-3-2-1 has been used at United before on some of SAF's best teams.

It's a great formation, especially when you consider Valencia's defensive abilities at the right side.

Seems like Kagawa is in a very similar situation to Juan Mata, though the person keeping them out of the #10 role are much different (Rooney v Oscar)

If I was Moyes, I would look at those Milan teams from the 2000's. They really worked to free Rui Costa and Kaka from defensive responsibilities so that they could focus on creating. A midfield trio of Carrick, Fletcher, and Felliani could work, as long as Fletcher can run around and harass players, while Felliani shields the back four and Carrick, whose sole job becomes to recycle possession, pick forward passes, and take higher positions to support the attack, and cut out counter opportunities.
If you go in that formation, you need amazing full-backs, players who can run, cross, and defend. I'm not sure Man U has those players yet.
