It's all over the Twitterverse so it must be true. According to Guillem Balague (@guillembalague):
"All agreed. Juan Mata will be a Manchester United player. 45 million euros. All will be announced very soon."

Time for him to be stuck on the wing.

frick. I hate this situation. He's easily been my favorite player. Even though I'm aware that tactically it makes sense to play others over him, it's not right that he had to ride the bench. Now he's going to damn Man U
. Please be BS

Haha doesn't he want to play inside? This makes no sense for any of the parties involved, especially ManU.

This squad will be a big change from the traditional flying winger sides that SAF built a legacy on.
Odd move for me, though he is undoubtedly a great player. Don't think United have the midfield partnership to compensate for a pure #10 (why Kagawa doesn't play).
Moyes throwing shite at the wall imo. Though if they can get Mata, RVP and Rooney on the field at once, magic could flow. They all operate such similar spaces though.

United will have no shortage of flair players in the number 10 role. Rooney, Kagawa, and Mata all prefer to play there. Young and Januzaj have played there recently.
Surely Moyes has something in mind. United fans will just have to trust Moyes' judgment. He is the chosen one after all.
He may have plans to change tactics and move beyond 4-4-2 into a 4-2-3-1 with a diamond-shape in midfield. That doesn't seem to fit his MO though.
ETA: I made my Moyes joke, but I'm a United fan.

This has to mean the end of Kagawa. Or a permanent move to the wing.
It's a good move as Mata can play in the hole, but this is a luxury move, holistically. If they could find that deeper midfielder to play along side Carrick, they would have a team that could contend. There are plenty of other holes in that team.
Mata is also a great enough player that you buy him and hope you can build your team around him. I don't know how you structure that team with Mata defensively, being that has been their major problem lately, along with injuries.

Moyes has been one of the most tactically flexible managers in the PL. He doesn't subscribe to any particular formation. A 4-4-2 got Rooney and RvP on the field at the same time, but at Everton he played with a variety of formations, depending on who was available and who he was playing.

And now apparently Chelsea or trying to sign Salah to replace Mata...

So why have they been stockpiling midfielders?

He'll replace Rooney in the 10 role for the 14-15 season imo.

I've had the same thought, actually. That this is a move to fill the inevitable hole Rooney will leave when we have to sell him in the summer.

I agree with that. I was referring more to Moyes' philosophy than to any formation itself. There is a longstanding criticism of Moyes, especially from Everton fans, that tactically he tends to set up teams "not to lose" rather than to attack and put the opponent on its heals. I have had this feeling as a United fan as well. With all those attacking players at his disposal, I feel he would have to change his tactical conservatism to get all those players on the field at the same time on a consistent basis.
