Look, I'm not saying you're wrong, because you're not, but you and most are acting like Liverpool and Roma should just be "happy to be there" (in fact that phrase was said on TV today)... Don't act like if Liverpool draw one of those two teams that there is no chance they win it over two ties,

So we a basically disagreeing to agree

To me it is pretty frickin ballsy to give Gianluigi Buffon a red card right before, basically, the last kick of the game which just so happens to be a penalty kick coming off the foot of Cristiano Ronaldo to win the round...very ballsy (and correct).

Buffon might be the only player to rival JT in terms of GOAT captain. He is the only keeper I would ever make the exception of giving the armband to.

I think everyone can appreciate Buffons greatness, but he's dead wrong here and insulting the ref on a petty level when the ref got it correct is a really poor look.

Who cares, I'm sure he'll regret those comments. Probably already does, but how can you blame him with that kind of emotion right after the match?

You don't call that with less than a min to go into stoppage time. With a chance at the semifinals on the line

Yeah, basically, I'm just saying there's a difference between being happy to be there and being a real threat... Liverpool can outscore anyone on any given day I'd say, but they also haven't played anyone on Real/Bayern's level, I'd argue it'd be a fun tie to watch

It’s a foul tho

You can’t plow through someone’s back

If that foul doesn’t happen he gets a shot off

If he doesn't get pushed, then he gets a chance to head that in with Buffon way out of position. In the moment I was pissed because I thought he slipped and blew the chance to win the game. The replay confirmed it was a clear foul, maybe not a very rough one, but enough to ruin a real scoring threat. You HAVE to call that there, and I would be saying the same if it went the other way.

What if he would have shot him with a shotgun? Do you forgive the murder because it is less than a minute to go with a chance at the semifinals on the line????

I mean how far do we go here....because I contend that foul caused him not to score that goal without a doubt.

By that logic, it should be a free for all if there's 1 minute left and the refs should just leave the field and let the players beat the hell out of each other until one of them scores.

It was a clear foul that took away a players shot at scoring a goal. Red card was warranted.

To be fair, that's about what happens most of the time.

However, I do think it was more a penalty than not.

Juve's meltdown is somewhat entertaining as a Roma fan since they've gotten the benefit of so many similarly debatable calls that decided huge Serie A matches and go on constantly about "champions overcoming those calls".

On another note, I wish this EPL ref "unafraid to call big penalties" would have been in charge of Roma's first leg against Barcelona when one clear penalty was waived off along with a couple more equal to the Real/Juve one.

It probably was a foul but that little pansy was more concerned about falling down than getting off a shot like 4 yards from the goal. He didn't deserve it for that reason alone.

That's one of the things I don't like about Lucas Vasquez.

Yeah, I tend to agree that you see a lot waived off for the player doing what Vazquez did in falling the second he felt a slightest contact. Benatia kicking so high around him is probably what sealed the call.

Also, wish the English press would save the "courageous" and "brave" descriptions of the referee. Brave would be giving a club like Roma or Tottenham that call in Madrid or Barcelona not Real at the Bernabeu.

I don’t know. Watch the replay in slow motion on YouTube. He’s focused on the ball the whole time until he gets the first push from behind. You can see his head and shoulders involuntarily move forward, throwing him off balance, then the defender finishing him off with a kick across his arm / body from behind. I don’t care if he added extra drama after it all happened. It’s a penalty. You don’t attack a player from behind in the box who is in front of you and the ball and expect anything but a penalty.
