That’s bc DPs make like 5 million a year and squad players struggle to make 50k

What improves the league is paying squad players more

Not sure why you quoted the 2014 numbers, since the 2018 numbers are almost double that. And the reason for that is TAM, which raised the salary of the middle of the roster. Which is largely why the league is better in 2018 than it was in 2014.

The lowest paid player this year made $54,500.

I think I counted ~79 players that made less than 60k, so about 3.4 players per team. I think 17 of those were on homegrown contracts that are in the first year or two of their first contract.

Once you get past that group of players making 54.5-59.9k, you quickly jump up to the next plateau at $67k. Looks like just under 2/3 of the league earns over 100k.

Also, a good portion of those players making under $100k spend most of the season in USL.

I'm just going to use Atlanta as an example, since I'm more familiar with their roster than any other team.

Players with a base salary of <100k in 2018:

Mikey Ambrose (68.9k)
George Bello (67.5k)
Andrew Carleton (75k)
Jon Gallagher (67.5k)
Julian Gressel (92.5k, and about to get a raise)
Chris Goslin (80k)
Mitch Hildebrandt (67.5k)
Alec Kann (94k)
Lagos Kunga (54.5k)
Patrick Okonkwo (54.5k)
Oliver Shannon (54.5k)
Andrew Wheeler-Omiunu (55.7k)
Romario Williams (71.5k)
Gordon Wild (90k)

17 other players had a base salary of >100k.

Bello, Carleton, Goslin, and Kunga are on homegrown contracts and are all under 20 years old.

Kann was the #2 GK all season, Hildebrandt was the #3 and spend some time with AUFC2.

Okonkwo and Wild spend the season on loan with Charleston in USL.

Bello, Carleton, Gallagher, Kunga, Shannon, and to a lesser extent Wheeler-Omiunu either mostly or exclusively played with AUFC2 in USL.

Only 7 DPs made at least 5M (Giovinco, Bradley, Vela, Schweinsteiger, dos Santos, Villa, Altidore).

Piatti made 4.7m.

Only 9 other players made more than 2m, and none of them made more than 2.777m.

So only 17 players made more than $2m.
