If a political operative going by the pretend title of "Republican strategist" goes on a daytime news show and says global warming isn't real, and an expert in environmental science says there is scientific consensus that the other person is completely wrong, the correct takeaway from this situation is not that both parties are right in some ways and wrong in others.

Well, I would counter that one (global warming) is a scientifically proven fact while the other (Landon Donovan's talent) is subjective.

I think Donovan should be there. But I haven't seen him play since the Gold Cup, and Jurgen has, so I default to him, while disagreeing.

I think Jurgen made a tough call, and one that he believes is right. I can't knock the guy for that. I don't think it's personal, though I won't rule it out.

I guess I'm just bothered that the emotional anti-Jurgen reaction reminds me of 1.12.12 when everyone conspired that "something happened in the LSU locker room." I get being upset that Donovan isn't there, and I even get blaming Jurgen/being upset with him. I just don't get not understanding the other side in this particular instance.

Landon Donovan cut shows Jurgen Klinsmann gives up on 2014 World Cup

I don't like to reply with just , so I'll embed it in this sentence replying to that headline.

ETA: Also, a good columnist should look at the other side of the situation (the possible reasons for the cut) and respond to them as part of his argument. This guy didn't.

Do you put any stock in what Michael Bradley says?

quote:
Last year, Michael Bradley said plainly, 'If we're going to play more than three games in Brazil, we need Landon.'

This week at Stanford, goalkeeper Tim Howard said, 'For me, it's a very easy equation. If Landon is on the field, he's our top one or two players ... he strikes fear in our opponents.'

ETA: Howard moreso than Bradley, since his was said last year.

That's as good a counter argument as I've seen. That kinda feels more like a punch in the gut, to be honest.

I don't think he strikes fear in anyone's eyes but Mexico right now.

Brad Davis is OLDER than Landon, has less international experience, and unarguably less talented in every facet of the game.

He's also a winger. Unless I got mixed up somewhere, I thought I remembered Jurgen saying that Landon was purely a second striker with this group. You can agree or disagree with that assessment, but it sounds like Jurgen rated Donovan as the fifth best striker behind Jozy, AJ, Wondo, and Clint.

I also wouldn't be surprised if Jurgen is planning on going diamond midfield and doesn't see Landon fitting there.

Brad Davis, if nothing else, can get to the line and swing a beautiful ball in.

There's also been a lot of confusion about positioning in this day-long debate. I know I grappled with Davis vs. Donovan without even seeing the forward comments until this AM.

He was the best position player for a very long time. Not a Ronaldo or Messi talent (although let's compare World Cup goals), but he was as important to our team until very recently as those guys were to their national teams. If a play needed to be made, people looked at Donovan first, then Dempsey and Bradley.

Now he is not the number one guy. American Soccer Now had him at 6th. If I am to be very pessimistic, I'd rank him behind Howard, Cameron, Besler, Fab, Bradley, Dempsey, Bacon, and Zusi. Hell, let's toss in Jones. So Donovan would be ranked as the 10th best player.

Barring John Harkes-level scumbag behavior or nothing but petulance (Nasri, maybe Tevez), there is absolutely no excuse in not bringing in your 10th best player unless you have a talent pool like Spain, Brazil, or the US basketball teams. No excuse.

We are.

Michael Bradley has said as much in an ESPN interview, and it was alluded to in the first 30 for 30 episode.

Landon Donovan could play any of those attacking 5 positions. He's not gonna take Bradley's spot so there are 4 positions where Donovan holds value. He doesn't need to pigeon hole himself to "I've got a good left foot" because his name isn't brad Davis or Jose Torres (lol).

Also, when has Landon ever been bad for the national team? That's something else I don't understand. What competitions/tournaments did I miss where Landon was anything less than phenomenal? Does that not go anywhere for him? Why not?

Bama Chick, I think we always saw eye to eye on Donovan You're just more easygoing, that's all

Can't say I agree with all of the article's points, although some of the decisions to pick younger players and Germans with thin resumes is curious. My only real beef is with Donovan, and the other stuff is bordering on nit-picking although I was unhappy with some other picks.

Rock Chalk, he wasn't good in 2006. But other than McBride, maybe Keller, Deuce in a few moments, and Onyewu in others, none of our guys looked all that good.

I am also not too hung up on 2006 because we dealt with a tough group and a very poorly officiated match against Italy.

I would've liked to have seen Boyd in the squad as striker and Landon as a MF.

That being said, I would absolutely love for Wondo to get some time and score some goals.

On the right side of the field. With Brad, you can have him sending in crosses from the left, and Zusi from the right (not that I'm advocating for Brad Davis).

I'll take back everything I've ever said about Wondo if he scores in Brazil.

Landon's national team form is usually better than with his club. Dempsey is quite the opposite. He has never sniffed the Fulham season with the national team. At least has generally looked good with our squad. It is just shocking and appalling to give up on a such steady, brilliant player who can provide so much.

OK guys, I think I have the answer ( in J.K.'s mind ) as to why he cut L.D. instead of Brad Davis or Wondo.

If you pick L.D. over B.D. or Wondo you have a guy that is more valuable in that he can play winger or forward and brings W. C. experience to the plate, so WHY CUT HIM ?

In J.K.'s mind if he cut him now, the shyt storm will be over in 3 weeks, but if L.D. rode the bence in the World Cup all the press coverage about the USMNT would be on why L.D. isn't starting, and it could very well be a distraction to the team and it also might SPLIT the team into FACTIONS.

If J.K. really cut L.D. for this reason he should have just come out and said so.

Now Green looks like the unworthy bad guy in all this, but he is not.
