by sandwiching the word "black" in the middle of a pejorative phrase it implies there is something inherently distasteful about having said skin color?

Exactly.

The English culture is over-sensitive to the word black. False racism is one of the biggest problems with the issue.

Well according to the Suarez witch hunt, it is completely against the rules to refer to the color of another person's skin. In England, it is racist (and apparently against the law as well) to say that a black person is "black" or that a white person is "white".

Yet, when Evra tells the referee he's calling fouls on him cause he's black... that gets you nothing...

If that ref had any balls at all, following that comment Evra would've have been ejected from the game and hopefully shortly thereafter, the country.

John Terry should be suspended twice as long, since there is actual evidence. Of course, since he is English, in a tournament year, there is a high chance this will be forgotten by the FA.

ETA criminal charges is still extreme. What is said on the pitch should be punished only on the pitch.

So what other laws should be ignored when they are broken on the soccer pitch? The field is not some sort of law-free zone

In short, yes. It already happens in the majority of sports.

It isn't like he stabbed him.

Oops. I misread that.

What about fighting? How many athletes have you seen brought to court for fighting on their field of play?

Did Haynesworth get jail time for stomping on that dude's head? He would have outside of sports.

Sorry TFTC. It was handled by police because a fan reported it to them and they have an obligation to investigate. The FA will still have a say. Please get information before you post ignorant opinions.

Kobe Bryant, was fined $100,000 for using "F'ing F****t" on the court.

Also, he has been fined for using multiple cuss words on the court.

He also allegedly raped someone. Kobe's image isn't THAT bad. Sure he lost some endorsements n etc.

Some of you people overreact on how Suarez and JT will be treated and worried about their images or the images of your Football clubs. When in reality, it takes a shite ton of bad things to happen to you for people to hate you when you're a great athlete.

Pacman Jones = Average player, lots of hate

He would have if Andre Gurode, I think that was the OL, pressed charges.

There have been charges and lawsuits brought against athletes for their conduct on the field/court. If you act outside of the normal scope of the organized event, you can be sued/charged. Doesn't happen as much as it could, but it certainly is possible and I think fair.

Also, I'd have to disagree with the sentiments of some in these past two days that the statements of Suarez and Terry aren't racist statements, but mere descriptions of Evra/Ferdinand being black. Words have explicit and implicit meanings, and the implication from both of those phrases used were clearly negative in nature with regards to race. What things are like in Uruguay should be considered in Suarez's case, though he has been in Europe since 2007 so he should have a pretty good idea of what can and can't be said in Europe.

If Suarez is right and it seems he truly didn't know it was bad to say that, then isn't Liverpool to blame for not educating their players? If this is any other corporation, you couldn't use that excuse and you would be fired.

im not sure, in other leagues (NFL, NBA, etc.) it's usually the league itself who educates players on the do's and don'ts...

by the way, you think Ferdinand was more offended by being called black or being called a count?

I don't think that really matters in the framework of the charges, but it's an interesting point to mull over.
