He's getting up there in age. Who is next in line to take over for him? Anyone good?

Brad Guzan who is damn near as Howard already will probably take over soon after the Cup since I expect Howard to retire from international play

Friedel doesn't get enough credit because he retired early into his career from the national team. I never understood why he did that since he was still our best keeper in 2006.

amen. God bless Kasey Keller, he is a great keeper, but whenever he plays in a World Cup we seem to be pretty meh (see 98 and 06). Freidel would have changed at least one game in Germany 8 years ago.

I like Howard, but if I'm picking I'm going with Friedel. His 2002 obviously has been stated, but what he did with Blackburn is what really stands out to me.

Its hard for me to not pick howard especially since he has been the goalie that i have seen between the sticks the most for the US. Friedel is the man though and the 2002 WC team was obviously my favorite.

Not to say he is the best, but this is arguably one of the best gk performances. Pele said it was the best he's ever seen.
He saves to his left, He saves to his right.. That boy Keller makes Brazil look like shite

we grow playing sports with our hands, not feet. We will always have an advantage at goalie

If for some ungodly reason we HAD to play Friedel against Germany on Thursday, I'd be completely okay with it.

He's probably still the 3rd or 4th best active American keeper, which is an absolutely ridiculous statement.

As much as I like Rimando, and am glad that he made it to a WC, I might just agree with you.

Probably the one position the World legitimately respects us at.

I noticed this in Europe last month, when my son's friend said we was a Soccer player from states, Brits etc were like whatever, but when he added or they found out he is elite goalie, they all wanted to play them and see if they could score on him, etc (He is just 14 but already 6 foot tall and lanky like a goalie.)

I was wondering if we didn't have some kind of EU Goalie street credibility or something.

Just wait till it's Guzan's turn for the USA. He is a beast. Obviously he won't get mentioned in GOAT talk because he won't play with the USMNT very long, but if Howard decides to hang it up after this WC, we will still be in good hands.

This. I think Guzan will surpass Howard when he gets his shot, and I love Timmy.

We are consistently elite at a position that requires hands.

some could say that friedel and Keller were both better

I don't think Howard has ever been on par with Freidel. Bu that, is my opinion, and like arse holes, we all have them

I always liked Keller better but friedal went beast mode in 2002. Howard is great, never worried with him. Plus he supposed to be a really good basketball player. I don't think we will need to worry about keepers.
