Who here really truly believes we will get out of our group?

So many variables, but I think we have a pretty good chance to advance.

I think what makes this one so exciting is this is a toss up. If I was a Germany fan, how exciting would this group stage be? USA is firmly on the bubble when it comes to making it out of the group stage. And if we do make it out of the stage you have to feel like USA accomplished something this WC even if they lose in first knockout game.

it's possible. we can beat ghana and portugal and tie germany (esp if they have nothing to play for)

i mean we beat portugal during their golden generation's peak in 2002. stranger things have happened

I'm actually fairly confident we do.

2-0-1 for 7 is not unrealistic. 2-1-0 for 6 is not unrealistic 1-0-2 for 5 with goal adv. is not unrealistic.

I think it's 50/50. We've got some big boys on the field for this WC, and some great speed off the bench.

Mix D is the "x" factor IMO

We don't need to win two games to advance most likely. Just pray that Germany wins their first two games so we'd just need a win and a tie.

Well we are definitely, on paper, the worst team in our group. That doesn't mean we can't advance but I don't think anybody, deep down, is really confident. I hope playing Germany last is a big advantage and that they have already pretty much clinched the group by the time we play them.

I think we're pretty even with Ghana but they seem to own us. I think Portugal is more talented than us but I think that can be a game where, if we Jose Mourinho the shite out of it, they can get frustrated and give up a cheap goal on the counter.

This.

But we could easily lose all 3 with a -7 goal differential. There aren't many teams in the world that could be confident about getting out of our group.
It's the World Cup, so who knows. Remember in 2010 with Landon and Deuce in their primes and a seasoned backline we were a few seconds from failing to escape a vastly inferior group. That year we were hurt by referee's decisions but still escaped. We need better luck this time, and we need to be a better team than we were then.

I think we have a chance, but it'll take a lot of work.

I believe we're capable of getting out of the group.

The minimum that we need is three ties, for Germany to beat Ghana and Portugal, and Portugal and Ghana to tie the last game. It's possible.

Eh, Ghana's mediocre backline and goalkeeper helps balance out the strength they have up front.

If I'm being honest I can't be too confident. But, the excitement of this group is through the roof. I remember how improbable the results felt in 2002 and think this year could be even better. So if we do go and play well and get the results it will be badass from a fan perspective.

Do yall think that this will be our most athletic back 4 to face Ghana in a WC (assuming the back 4 is Fab, Cameron, Besler and Chandler)? Might be the difference we need

My personal feeling is that W-D-L and hope for the right result from other games is about our ceiling. I'm not tickled after Azerbaijan either.

To advance I think we need to have an in form striker capable of asking questions in the opponents final third, and a solid unit on the back line that can handle the constant pressure the teams in our group are capable of providing. Ball winning, retaining possession, and quality distribution from the CM's. And the ability to stretch the field and send in a few quality crosses from the wings.

I think the midfield can hold it's own, but the ask might be too big for Jozy and the back line. At least Jozy will get some help when Clint returns, but the back line still looks like an experiment.

My biggest fear is a team that goes up 1-0 and then packs it in like Italy... I don't know if we can overcome that.
