He’s been blowing hot air for a long time,” he said. “He was an average player. He was a failed GM. And I think he gets the great thing about sports: Now you have an opportunity to get paid for your opinion when you’re finished playing, and it’s a good thing. Everyone has an opinion. And I think you have to deal with praise and criticism the same way. If you deal with praise the wrong way, it can be detrimental. This is my 20th year playing as a professional. I’ve gotten criticized a lot. But I’m still doing something right. If Alexi wants to speak to me personally, he’s always around. He can find me. The likelihood is he won’t speak to me personally. But that’s just who he is. He’s a character.”

(Lalas’s response: “Tim is right. Now go qualify for the World Cup.”)

Lalas has his stupid moments, but his knowledge of the inner workings of the USMNT is some of the best.

I still prefer Lalas over Herculez Gomez.

Yep. Same here.

Watching him on ESPNfc is rough. I thoroughly enjoyed watching Craig Burley tear into him the other day.

I actually liked what Lalas said. Yeah, he is a character, but there was truth in his statement. I especially liked how he said they have more advantages now than the USMNT ever had. Failing to qualify now is an embarrassment.

I'm also fine with what Howard said. He deflected a bit, but also didn't sound insulted or offended.

Perfect response from Lalas. To my knowledge, he's never claimed to be some great player for the U.S. or a great manager. But I like him as a commentator. I like that he isn't afraid to speak his mind and not always be a sunshine pumper, but rather gives an honest opinion.

Gomez is a world class panderer. He sounds like a guy from Oklahoma calling a US match and a guy from Tijuana calling a Mexico match.

I know many people who are American with something else who tailor how they speak to who they are around.

I didn't have a problem with Lalas' comments. I really like the way Howard responded. I fricking love the way Lalas responded to Howard.

He's trying way too hard to make these big points in every conversation and it just falls flat.

I think the fact that Howard felt like he had to come out and say something and even throw in the "If Alexi wants to speak to me personally, he’s always around. He can find me." line just further proves how soft our media is as a whole on the national team

So flat that the starting USA GK felt that he he had to respond.
