-Never played soccer
-27 years old
-Watched regularly for over a decade now

-Im athletic and run 10-15 miles a week. Play ultimate frisbee regularly.
-Just bought some cleats and am working with a ball
Am I going to ruin these guy's games if I show up? Any advice?

I didn’t start playing (as in never even kicked a ball) until I was 26. With that level of fitness, you’ll be immediately better than most you’ll play with in terms of movement and stamina which is really most of the battle with soccer.
The technique will come with practice. Watch a couple of videos on how to kick a ball, find some dribbling drills to do, and learn to shoot. All of those just take reps.
You’ll do fine as long as you aren’t athletically awkward.

I wouldn’t be concerned about the skill level of some random chodes

Depends on the pickup game, but you'll be fine as long as they understand that you're trying to get into the game.
Play defense, keep it simple, and do not just stand in front of the goal to block shots.
You should be fine for the most part.

As stated above-depends
I go to a group on Wednesdays that has some serious talent and other who I do not think have played. It’s coed and very laid back. I think 1 or 2 out of the 15-20 actually really try. The test just drink a lot and have fun.
Now Saturdays there is a serious adult Group that is way to serious with injuries and what not that I avoid.
Find a fun one. You may fiend a great group of people to watch games with at your local tap.

I like to blast shots point blank into dumbasses that do this.

I'm going to give you a trick that will help you. First get a size 1 ball (or a few), some cones, and a free wall where you can hit the ball at the wall. Make any random shape with the cones (I like a diamond shape with four cones in the middle and two cones on the outside), with enough distance between the cones so you can move between them. Do some very simple movements at first, walking around each cone controlling the ball, switching the ball from the left to the right and vice versa in different directions. Practice hitting the ball and receiving passes, making sure that your body position is correct when receiving the ball. After a few weeks of this, and actually playing games, see where you stand. I've seen players make massive improvements with the size 1 ball and cones, and I recommend that size now to everyone.

Most of those dudes will probably suck. Just play defense and don't hack at ankles

Where do you live? (approximate, not trying to be a stalker)

Don't forget to grab the shirt.

Birmingham.
Thanks for all of the advice. Will pick up some cones today. I'm going to shoot for a game this weekend. I'll report back with an update.

Gotcha. Was going to suggest a league around Lafayette if you were near there. Disregard and good luck!

Pretty much this. I play in a couple pick-up games and one is former college players who are active coaches and are very technically proficient, and the other is guys who played in high school and then didn't touch a ball for 15 years. In one I'm the best player and the other I'm there just to play and have a good time, and they are fine with that.
Your stamina should keep you from embarrassing yourself. Until you get a chance to get a better feel for the ball be the guy who looks to pass first, before taking on a player directly.

If these are small sided pickup games using the baggable goals, don't even bother working on shooting. Passing and dribbling all day while watching a few videos to learn defensive mechanics/movements will go a long way

Play wing back. Push them to the outside and don't stab. If you're in good shape, hustle and willing to play D will earn more respect if experience lacks. As you gain confidence, try different positions.
Show up early and find some guys to kick the ball around with before game.

Master trapping the ball, passing, and don’t stab and you’ll be okay.
Curious, anyone in here play in New Orleans? Crescent City leagues specifically?

I did the play nola league for Season, but it's not worth it.
There's a group that plays on Thursdays right outside the zoo, but I don't know if that's more organized pickup or walk up and play. If they're out there today, I can walk over and see

I’ve played in the SELASA league at Laferniere Park, the Crescent City league Uptown, and the Playmakers Indoor league.
The top SELASA was really fun. Some good competition at the top and some fun high scoring games when we played the teams at the bottom of the league.
The Crescent City league was fun, but there were a lot more ex-football players, so there was lots of reckless tackling. I injured my knee pretty badly on an awful tackle (which pretty much ended me playing in any organized league).
The indoor league was really fun too, but it’s been years since I played out there.

i played a pickup game with usl players once. im an out of shape alcoholic. i just about collapsed from running all over the field and had a miserable time.
my only highlight was absolutely leveling one of the opposing players like i was john lynch. he ran into me for the contact and i dont think he realized i wasnt a soccer player and would play the flop. full on forearm shiver.
hope this helps
