re: Gregg Berhalter says USMNT player was nearly sent home from World Cup due to poor behavior

I agree, but it’s also ok to call out Gio for his pretty consistent whining at Dortmund and the National team. It’s been called out on the board before and Gio pretty understandably gets a pass because of how young he is.
That being said, he’s been playing professionally for long enough now that you feel like it would be out of his system.

I still think it's ridiculous to blame him because it rained outside in parts of the country today.
the big story here is that one of the best players in the pool was available but didn’t feature in the World Cup, because he and the manager were at odds. In the context of a national team, I think that reflects poorly on both the player and the manager. You disagree. Cool.

I don’t think it was meant to be off the record at all. The way the company presented it is very direct.
I don’t think it matters much at this point, and I don’t foresee Gio becoming the American Carlos Vela going forward.
I am surprised that it got that bad, especially considering Gregg’s relationship with Claudio.
Btw Steffen posted something about taking a mental health break in the summer recently. He brought it up directly, and as far as I can tell, with no prompting.

Again, minus all of this new info, Gio wasn't 100%.

Him saying he was ready and then playing 90 and scoring for BvB doesn’t make you question the story that he wasn’t fit?

His BVB coach literally said he's still working back to fitness.
Also, if you just watched him when came on against the Netherlands, he was laboring after like 15 minutes.

Right but he played him.

Well he’s only played 57 minutes in the last couple of weeks. Maybe that’s what Edin meant.
But that’s beside the point. Originally Gregg said it was due to tightness, then walked back his comment and said he was ready to go and it was the coach’s decision. The narrative that he wasn’t 100% was dead long ago.

I was in the player pool for the ‘92 Olympic team for Barcelona. You?

That’s pretty cool! Didn’t make it that far. But played through college, and tried out for and was in the film, “The Game of Their Lives”.

Right but he played him.
A month later in a half-paced friendly against a Liga 1 Romania team.
Little bit different.

Statement from Gio’s Agent
quote:
Attempts to reach Reyna's agent, Dan Segal, about an hour before publication and after Berhalter's comments were published by Charter, were not immediately successful. Segal later provided The Athletic with the following statement. "Gio obviously did not have the experience anyone hoped for at the World Cup. The situation, relationships and interactions among parties are far more complicated than what has been reported. It is disappointing and disrespectful for certain parties to be commenting on private team matters publicly, especially when some do so without full knowledge of the facts and others do so in a self- serving manner. "At this point, our view is that nothing more is gained by those associated with the national team turning on each other, and we plan no further comment on this matter.

This is being made a much bigger deal than it is.
I am curious who leaked Gio's name to The Athletic because Gregg never mentioned names.

Gregg is terrible at talent selection, tactics, and molding the two together. Why we are in a 4-3-3 of all formations absolutely evades me.
Your job as manager is to get your XI best players on the field. It’s not that hard… make it work!
We don’t have a true #9, so why force one? Play Gio as the 10 in a diamond midfield and let Christian and Tim play how they play best.
Gio knows he is one of, if not THE best player in the pool. Gregg leaving him out is a worthy reason to be pissed, especially if he is fully healthy. Gio being left out is a result of Gregg’s tactical one-dimensionality. (Excuse me, two dimensions… he parks the bus with one goal leads, too.)
I’d be slacking too if I knew I wasn’t in the plans despite being a major talent and earlier lynchpin in the starting XI only to have an MLS simpleton with no tactical variety sit me on the biggest stage in the world.
Gio has shown his abilities constantly in national team caps. He had been injured, but apparently was completely healthy.
So what is the stick up Gregg’s @$$? He’s literally the reason Gio is in a shitty mindset. Gio is right about who Gregg is, and Gregg can’t understand it because he only knows one way to play the game.

He wasn't.
The reports said that and him lagging behind after 15 minutes against the Netherlands said that.

Good answer. Leave it as that.

Gio is 20 and has a lot of talent, but he needs to grow the fock up
Posted on 12/11/22 at 8:21 pm to Alyosha
Maybe if GGG had been bright enoughto put one of our top 2-3 players in the starting lineup, this wouldn’t have been as issue?

FIFY
And that’s ALL you took out of that post? Even if it WERE true, it wouldn’t explain why he was slacking in training. He wouldn’t even be in full training if he wasn’t fit for it.
So again I will ask, what is the stick up Gregg’s arse?
Answer: Tactical inability/stubbornness.
Gio knows he doesn’t fit into this scheme, and watches as his hapless coach tries to square peg/round hole a #9 from our player pool into his system.
