Good Piece on Gus Johnson's Struggles w/ Announcing Games

Pretty interesting. It makes me appreciate the velvety sounds of Ian Darke, Martin Tyler, et al. Hope Gus doesn't affect the UCL (and subsequent WC) enjoyment for people trying to learn/get into soccer.

Thanks for posting that. Kind of agree with everything he writes.
I doubt that's much to worry about. Seems that it's fans who've been watching for ages that find his lack of ready knowledge/feel of the game most awkward.

I couldn't agree with this more.
Darke's call on the Donovan goal against Algeria was so perfectly paced. The terse, hopeful snippets of "Distribution. Brilliant" all the way to the flowery "You could not write a script like this" as the dog pile occurs.... The most brilliant description of a sporting event I've ever heard.

Darke is so much better than everyone else...
I'm a Gus Johnson fan in general but don't want him involved in International matches- it's awkward and distracting.
Just not a fit at this point.

While I don't disagree with this general notion:
I do believe this is 100% true:
It's a wildly difficult thing to do (not under or over-hitting it), and something that is difficult to appreciate without having (or least having tried to have) done it.... Just as a really long bounce pass in basketball or hitting on to the green with beautiful backspin.
No, I don't think your average rube can appreciate it, but you could say that about many things in many sports.

Yeah, it's like it baseball when a shortstop running into the hole flips the ball with his glove to the second baseman covering. You don't appreciate how hard that is until you try it.

Oh, you could point to something simpler than that. I could say that a stretch/dig from a first baseman looks easy as shite.... "hey, you just reach down and grab it" doesn't remotely capture how tough it is to frick that up.

Also cantor showed more emotion than 95% of Americans had after the goal. I know I was in tears of joy though. So much pride after that

I actually hate the drawn out Gooooooaaaaall thing. I feel like in big situations, an announcer needs to do one of two things:
1. Say nothing and let the viewer absorb the crowd and participants' reactions.
2. Say something that describes the situation or what is going on. For instance, Ian Darkes "Surely through. Oh, it's incredible" is something that is memorable because it is unique to the situation.
Cantor just saying goal for a long period of time is not memorable and it takes away from the viewer being able to absorb the scene.

I think the his excitement during the build up, his reaction after he finishes his "gol", and what the camera picks up allows you to absorb the scene.

What is he adding by just saying goal for a minute long? He might as well just scream for a minute straight. I liked his excitement leading up to the goal, but the aftermath is unnecessary and annoying. It's just very forgettable.
