In football players are just now figuring out there's something to be gained by flopping. Considering how commonplace its become in the last few years, its about to get REAL bad.

Just for example of how hard it is to see even with video, here's video of a famous "dive" that people bitched about like it was an affront to all humanity the last World Cup:
From this view it looks like the player just takes a huge dive with no contact at all to get a free kick:

However, if you look at it slowed down it sure seems like the defender behind him stabs his studs right down his achilles and twists his ankle as he lands, all while in full sprint.
This seems pretty consistent with the reaction of not putting weight back down on the other foot and his "acting" like it hurt like hell for a minute:

The flopping doesn't bother me. It's the faces they make while doing it. Flopping can be helpful in some sports. But holy frick soccer players, flop like men! They literally look like females the way they do it.

Goddamn, you have no idea how bad that, or a stomp on the top of the foot or side of the ankle hurts until that shite happens to you.

The NBA has fines but they're not steep enough. I'm not sure how saying flopping exists in the NBA means it isn't worse in soccer. Has anyone even argued it doesn't exist in basketball?

Go start a non-world cup related soccer post on the MSB or OT and see how many "gay" or "pussy" posts you have to sift through before a legitimate response comes in.

There's a really odd dynamic by which a lot people seem to "defend" their sport by attacking others. When a sport is more popular in "other" demographic groups that really increases the vitriol of the response.
I would say that basketball (both college and NBA) often gets a pretty similar genre of responses in TD even if not to the degree soccer does.

I have. And *if* I dive, it's for two reasons:
- I've been fouled enough to throw off my run, and I don't trust the ref to get it right.
- I've been fouled hard, and I want to be able to control how I land, and not hurt myself landing awkwardly.

Based on the amount of Finals/Lebron threads on the MSB this past week, I can't recall anyone making references to homosexuality. Hell, there are people on the MSB that won't even recognize soccer as a sport.
There is such stigma when it comes to soccer and I honestly do not get it. Maybe it's because we are not that good at it as a country, but even during the olympics I see a lot of people cheering on our water polo and table tennis teams.

This is true. The connotation with basketball is that it's a sport for thugs (read:blacks) as opposed to gays (read:foreigners).
ETA: "I'd watch basketball if it was still a team sport, like when Bird used to play, but now it's a bunch of thugs playing one on one."

Honestly, I think the issue comes in when the perception is that the soccer culture is trying to impose their importance on other sports and they are either annoyed or feel threatened.
I think there's plenty of room for Soccer in the US, just need a transcendent player and better AAU system.

You seem to be talking about drawing legit fouls. I'm more talking about flailing on the ground for forty seconds like you got sniped from 100 yards out. I love soccer but casual fans are correct about how often and how pathetic it is. It cannot be defended.

Agree to disagree, but I don't think they (we?) are trying to impose as much as defending something that they (we?) like to watch.
I consider myself a sports fan in general. My favorite sport of all is baseball, but I find joy in watching soccer, football, basketball, etc. If the hate for soccer is because americans feel threatened that it may replace another sport, it is very misguided. Soccer isn't replacing any of those sports that I mentioned, but it can still be popular in America.

One of the games last week I was LOL'ing at a guy who flopped and bc of the angle of his flop he was grabbing his leg away from his sightline of the ref. so he rolled over and when he realized the ref wasn't looking, planted on that same leg and did a full sprint to catch up to the ball
