Pirlo is a historically good player. You could win a World Cup without a player the caliber of Pirlo.

They usually have 3, 4 or 5 players that usually get mentioned on lists of the 100 or so greatest players to ever play the game.

Literally no one even close. Pirlo is a legend. We have likely yet to develop a world class player.

I believe Lederman has Israeli parents (or maybe just one of his parents), but if he ends up being any good, he'll be a US player for sure.
Alejandro Guido is a young guy who may end up being very good. And then there's that guy Pelosi at Liverpool, but these are all very much developmental prospects who may end up out of pro soccer in 4 years.

Pirlo is a once in a lifetime talent. He's not the biggest, strongest, or fastest, but he controls the game like no other player in the world. If you ever expect the US to have a player like that you're going to be disappointed, as would almost every other country in the world.
Now, if you asked does the Youth System have a Claudio Reyna type talent coming up, I would say yes.
ETA: Until soccer becomes the dominant sport in the US we will never bring up players with the quality of a Messi, Ronaldo, and certainly not a Pirlo. That comes from, literally, never playing another sport and dedicating you're entire life to soccer. Unless the MLS develops a youth system like the rest of the major players have the US will never have that type of player. That type of systems will never happen here, though, because of the opportunities to play too many other sports as a kid and in high school.
ETAA: I know that some kids have gone overseas to join the academies over there. The problem with that is sometimes they will earn citizenship for another country and choose to play for them.

Also Lederman and Pynadath are 13 years old. No way to tell where they will eventually play.
Hyndman is almost certainly going to be a CM.
If the US can get the services of Gedion Zelalem, then we might have our Pirlo. He has as good vision as any player Arsenal's ever had at that age. Amazing at times.

Yeah, I was thinking of that and Spain 2010 and France 1998 but even Italy 2006 that was less of an overwhelming favorite had Pirlo, Totti, Del Piero, Buffon, Cannavaro, Nesta and youngsters like De Rossi.

What's the latest on Gedion Zelalem? Latest thing I can find is when he and his dad were in Washington in May trying to get Gedion a U.S. passport.
That would be a huge get for us and he really seems to want to play for us over Germany despite probably being able to play for Das Mannschaft.

That French team was full of superstars too. A midfield trio of Makelele-Vieira-Zidane has to be one of the best combos ever.

Their defense was unreal - Cannavaro, Nesta, Zambrotta, Gattuso, and Buffon with Pirlo in front of them. They only gave up two goals the whole tournament (an OG and a PK), so they didn't need the best attackers.
