Did the Balogun drama wind up hurting the team?

Carli Lloyd saying that without saying it on the postgame show basically saying the United States lost before they even hit the pitch but she “wasn’t sure why”.

It does make you wonder if the team would have been better off feeding off of anger and emotion without Balogun, as crazy as that sounds when comparing the alternative of having him.

I think it obviously did. I don’t think we were in a right head space mentally.

I mean guys couldn’t play simple passes or trap the ball or make a single tackle.

We just weren’t there

It almost felt like the American mentality out there was that they didn’t deserve to be there after the Balogun story became the centerpiece and automatically felt like their place was fraudulent.

This is not a mentally strong team. We were always on borrowed time before it was revealed

I just expected it to be the quarterfinals going up against a legit titan and not the weakest Belgium team in almost 2 decades

US changed their gameplan up completely but trying to score on the counter attack and attacking Belgiums weakness. That didn't work and it was obvious stalling their forward momentum

I really think Belgium threw Poch a curveball by sitting their stars to start the game..

It seemed like we were trying to play a different game than usual (on offense). On defense we've gotten lucky with our back line and they simply got exposed by better players tonight

Yeah I mean we had egregious individual defensive errors by Dest twice, Freese, and Richards.

And Ream isn’t the guy to erase those mistakes, which he had the chance to do twice.

It certainly didn't help.

I actually take it as a compliment though that Belgium had to resort to some BS to try and throw us off.

First two goals weren't surprising.. if you're going to give them that much space on the edge you better have someone other than Ream to head them out

Richards was surprisingly awful tonight.. but the worst thing was how we would just give up on every offensive possession and stop at midfield. Our gameplan was apparently to try and keep feeding the middle even though they were defending only that area

I disagree that it played a major role. The guys simply shite their shorts against a better team who owned them a few months ago.

They're on home soil, have been treated like heroes over the last week, and have had more of the nation following them than ever before. I think the moment overall got to them.

I mean it’s hard to say what our game plan was. Guys couldn’t even play simple passes or trap the ball. No one won a tackle against a Belgian player in midfield all fricking game.

It was just one of the most obvious examples of shitting the bed I can remember

Plus the defense and goalie have been a ticking time bomb waiting to go off. They got away with loose play against lesser teams but finally played a team who doesn't screw up those opportunities.

I agree. I don’t think he was to blame for either goal, he just couldn’t erase the mistakes of others.

As bad as everyone was, I think there’s a good chance the game ends 2–2 if Freese doesn’t make that huge mistake. The Reyna sub worked and were starting to turn the screws

No doubt. Defense and GK was a major concern heading into the World Cup anyway.

Throw in the errant passes, bad touches, losing almost every 50/50 ball, and a general lack of endeavor tonight, we were basically asking for an arse-whooping.

He absolutely gets some blame for the 2nd goal. It was a fairly lazy cross and he had position on the attacker. He got absolutely bodied by a kid he outweighs by 20 lbs.

ETA: As a CB, you’re supposed to be the stalwart. You do the bodying, not the other way around.

For sure. Everyone gets blame for how the first half went. Every single player was timid and just looked so overwhelmed.

That being said it’s 2-1 and we’re looking good and growing into the game with the Reyna sub…and then we go no call on Pulisic, he’s injured and down to ten men, Freese fricks up

I've never seen a US team play with a tighter a-hole than tonight. I've seen them get beat. I've seen them take arse whoopings. I've seen them play bad.

But I've never seen them play this far off their level. Maybe 2-3 guys looked up for it tonight. The rest looked like a Chinese fire drill for 90 minutes.
