I've been hassled for 3 years on this board by including Pirlo in all the "Top 5" player lists.

I think you and I have been the only ones to consistently rate him. Hell I was in love with him after 2003 on that awesome Milan team. He was brilliant in 06 as well. He's a magnificent player, and probably my favorite player of all time.

Italy were the better team no doubt. Their defensive organisation was great and they created tons of opportunities up front by beating defenders 1 on 1

Italy's individual defenders are not really any better than Germany's. They play a much more defensive style and defend better as a team, clearly.

The few times they were on an island, the German attackers got by them fairly easy (especially Reus).

Germany play a very entertaining style but if they don't take their chances, games like today will happen.

i love how fluid Italy is, everyone works hard on defense and getting back, but when they win the ball, they have everyone coming up to help with the attack. i wouldn't call it counterattacking, they just play all out defense when they dont have the ball and then play all out attacking when they have it (obviously not recklessly, especially when they have a lead)

Italy is always organized. That's why they normaly do well in tournaments.

This game is mainly on the shoulders of Jogi. If you're going to experiment, when something works you stick to it. Reus should have started that game. They should not have put on Kroos to start because that move forced his best player out to the flanks.

Just awful decision making today.

He out-thought himself maybe? It's a shame because Germany were on a hell of a run.

Like I said earlier, he coached like the underdog.

I love Toni Kroos, but when I saw the team come out and he was in with Podolski, you knew the shape was going to change. Özil, good as he is, doesn't function as effectively when you push him wide. Khedira, Schweiny and Kroos all on the pitch at the same time is a lot of the same thing (though Kroos has a bit more attacking impetus).

Jogi has a lot of questions to answer, and I'm not sure a change isn't in order for when WC qualifying rolls around in September.

Right here. No one in their right mind outside of Italy would have expected them to take over the match like they did. Germany just didn't play very well, and that made Italy look better than they were. That's not to say they aren't world class, but they certainly aren't a team that Germany should be down 2-0 and looking desperate against. Of course, this is the International play, where the USA can beat the World Champions and Masters of The Universe, Spain, so it isn't out of the ordinary for results like this.

This would seem a bit extreme IMO. Under him, they've been excellent. With him on the coaching staff, Germany has finished 3rd in WC 2006, 2nd at Euro 2008, 3rd at WC 2010 and semis at Euro 2012 (wish there was a third place playoff).

It would, but it would also be par for the course in international soccer. Let's remember that this is the first generation of German players who have cycled through the international side since the German youth system was reorganized in 2000. In that time they've produced one of the best teams never to win a trophy. That's no small feat considering where Germany was in the late 90's and early 00's (their 2002 cup run not withstanding). The team has changed from a reactive counterattacking side to a proactive possession side. In this way, their fluid identity is maybe a lack of identity. Low in this sense has been one of the most successful managers of all time. But it's quite unusual for a manager to stay past four years. Low has been on the job for 6 years. Maybe a change should happen just to change the culture a little bit. Germany's recreation has been amazing, but maybe it is time they settle on an identity like the Italians and the Spaniards. Or maybe it is the time to step back and realize they are on their way to gaining that identity if they give it just a little more time.

It helps that over half their starting line-up plays together at the club level, and four of five across the back:

Buffon, Barzagli, Bonucci, Chiellini, Pirlo, & Marchisio all play for Juventus.

Trying to imagine a US team where most of our defense was already used to playing together. That has to help tremendously...

This is what I was thinking. But you make a great point. And now that I think about it, the roots of Germany's current identity can be traced back to Klinsmann in 2004. So 8 years and counting. Maybe it is time for a culture change like you said. Whatever happens, Germany have an abundance of young talent and they will be one of the favorites for WC 2014.

Very true. Today was Pirlo's symphony. And I really think Italy will win it on Sunday.

damn it!!! I hate Italy. I knew ze germans defense would bite them in the arse, just figured it would be against spain.

I dont really follow serie A like i used to. Havent heard Pirlos name since last world cup, well and against the US. I think thats why people underrate him. Out of sight, out of mind.
