Seriously. This isn't the OT. We don't have to critique the smoothness of her elbows in order to say she's hot.

He changed his tactics to try to counter Italy. He coached like Germany was the underdog.

I'm surprised that it mattered. I thought Germany would waltz through this thing. To be fair, they would have if not for Balotelli.

Why do people keep saying the ref didn't let them take the free kick? He did and they decided to play it up instead of hitting it into the box.

I agree. I expected more of Jogi. I thought he had this all figured out.

Yeah, Balotelli showed us the great Balotelli today. 2 chances 2 goals. Both came from shoddy defending. Germans had more chances but wasted them all

It shouldn't have really mattered either way, Germany was still on the attack. Plus you can add the argument that he should have added some additional time anyway because of the time for the pk.

I think it was more about Germany failing than Italy doing anything out of the ordinary. Italy was organized and hit on the counter like everyone expected.

This. .

Which is to say that the supposed "gap" between Italy and Germany and Spain I keep reading so much about on here must not be so huge.

Germany's weakness is that the defense is prone to bad errors. It's usually masked by the fact that Germany bosses the midfield.

However, Pirlo/De Rossi/Montolivo/Marchisio are every bit as good as Germany's midfield so the match came down to who finished and defended better.

Cassano/Balotelli/Montolivo showed the finishing quality necessary and Bonucci/Barzagli/Chiellini/Balzaretti outplayed Badstuber/Hummels/Boateng/Lahm by a decent margin.

They still didn't have the quality chances Italy had. They really should have had 2 more goals.

Italy's best chances came when Germany switched to 3 in the back and abandoned defense. Germany had much better chances but they didn't go in.

A few times the ball was bouncing around the 6 yard box as well

Historical data. Of the 31 meetings between them Italy have won 15 times to 7 with 9 draws.

In competitive competition, Italy have NEVER lost to Germany (4 wins, 4 draws), and are unbeaten against Germany in the last 6 matches overall (4 wins, 2 draws)

Also in semi's for all major tournaments, the Italians have advanced to the finals now 9 times out of 11.

There is something to be said for catennacio strategy. Its not the same as parking the bus.

Master class from Italy, "Germans" had no answer for them and the score totally flattered them.

Beautiful show from the Italians.

What's with the quotes around Germans? Was that a faux German team that played today that I don't know about?

The gap between talented youth players in both national player pools is fairly significant, favoring Germany. The gap in the Starting XI's today skews slightly less in favor of the Germans who played poorly today.

This is really a last hurrah for Pirlo, Italy's overwhelmingly best player. I'm not to familiar with the Italian player pool, but he's basically irreplaceable in his creative role at this point in time.

I think Italy controlled the match (outside of the first 20 minutes). Their back 4 outplayed Germany's no questions asked. Germany's midfield looked unorganized and failed to outplay Italy's, which I thought was their key to victory going into the match. Schweinsteiger and Ozil disappeared for stretches of the match and Germany really suffered because of that. Obviously Germany failed to convert on the few really good chances they had, while Balotelli put away his chances with pure class.
