Designated Players are part of the problem

In the long run it may be a good thing if they help create new fans of MLS teams. However, it is killing the current team.

This right here is the real problem with the program overall. There's only ONE problem and anything else is just deflecting for Jurgen. Hell, we did it a little at the end with Bob a lot, too. It got to the point to where it just went sour and there was no repairing it. The frustration had gone too far to ever really fix it. It's almost considered a sin to mention MLS in any way that isn't a glowing tribute, especially now after Jurgen's taken so many shots and made people even more defensive over it.

We have to accept, though, that Jurgen's the reason why we're crashing and burning so terribly, but he's not the Achilles heel keeping the US from being some elite team. People, mostly decent but not superstar talents, are being offered a deal where they get paid more to come here, be a star player for whichever club MLS wants to have them, and have much less pressure and lower competition. Add in a lot of guys from the States who always struggled for respect and validation who are basically being offered their dream of the money and fame while still playing at home. It's a little silly to say that all of that doesn't have any effect on a player's drive to stay hungry. It's the main reason I'm excited to see more players like Giovinco coming over and crushing it because it's going to raise the expectation of what a star player in MLS should be.

US Soccer has a whole mess of problems outside of Jurgen, and I'm not exactly enthusiastic about the fact that so many people refuse to even acknowledge them until after he's gone. How do we even know who to hire until we analyze everything that they'll be influencing and making decisions on? We're not some powerhouse that people dream of managing. Jurgen came here to pad his ego and be the guy to do the unthinkable and make the US a footballing power. We need to be really careful not to make the mistake of bringing in another guy who wants to make it his team with his influence without them really fitting our program.

Outside of him though, there aren't a TON of foreign players in their prime playing in MLS.

Its awesome to watch but it shows the gap the MLS has to cover.

Good thing is his contract has virtually priced him out of a move back to Europe.

But on the flip side it is doing the same to USMNT players who are not performing anywhere near what they are getting paid.
