It's not supposed to bend that way.

So what happens in these cases? Does he get an operation once the US is done playing? How much is the nose permanently disfigured?

Anyone here a) break their nose and get it fixed b) study rhinoplasty or c) stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night?

How was that not at least a yellow for the high kick?

Maybe the ref didn't see it, but I'm not sure how he didn't if he was following the ball.

Doesn't look any different than Glass's nose.

Thats what I am saying.
He was so high in the air, that obviously he knows he won't be able to really kick that ball.
Oh well, game is over and we have the win.

Even after he's done playing for the summer? Man, I'd be pissed if my beautiful (some might say structurally perfect) nose was broken by some klutz and I was permanently deprived of one of my top physical attributes.

That thing broke. He'll wear a mask I would imagine from here on out.

I broke my nose playing high school baseball when the on deck batter walked back to the dugout to take his damn practice swing. Had two black eyes for about a week and never had surgery. It was swollen and it was sore for a few days, but it wasn't bad. I could see him maybe wearing a mask to protect his nose if FIFA allows that. Otherwise, he'll be fine.

My brother had his broken in a basketball game after taking an elbow to the nose. Doc moved it back into position that night after the swelling went down and he wore a clear mask over his face for the next month during games.

Did your physical appearance and/or snoring change at all in the long run?

I don't know why, but I've always thought broken noses were more complicated than something like a broken wrist or rib.

He'll probably look like Zorro Torres at the next game:

Deuce would swag it up way harder than Torres.

I expect an homage to fallen Houston rappers on his mask.

Nope. Worst part was the bleeding sinuses but once that went away, everything was fine.

I got mine crushed by some kid's forehead in HS going up for a header. I went to the bench and the trainer put it back in place, and I went back in after HT. That happened on a Tuesday night, I went to the doctor Wednesday morning, and had him set it back and stuff some gauze in it. He took it out Friday morning, and I played Saturday. Granted, that was 10 years ago and my nose is still fricked up, but I doubt he will miss a WC game.

ETA... I didn't wear a mask either.

Gets a CT scan of the face to look for what's fractured. Mainly you are looking for orbital bone fracture, entrapment of the ocular muscles, or septal hematoma.

Unless there's entrapment of an ocular muscle you don't really do immediate surgery. If there's a septal hematoma you just drain it at the bedside.

Usually they'll splint it with a Denver splint or something similar and set it in place. Wearing as a face mask as mentiones while playing would be advised.

If for some reason it doesn't set correctly or has trouble breathing he can have a rhinoplasty performed later once the swelling goes down to straighten everything out.

ETA: should mentioned ct scan isn't usually necessary unless you worried about entrapment or a hematoma to begin with. I would say these days a lot of ER docs get them as a precautionary measure.

Surely he wouldn't have been able to finish the game if the break were a bad one. Right?

Thanks for the explanation.

I figured Dempsey wouldn't miss more than a practice or two (and he really doesn't need the extra reps), but whenever I hear stuff like

I wonder what went wrong, how things could have been done better, and what people have to live through after the injury's initial period is over.
