re: Arsenal's "Things Are Gonna Change, I Can Feel It! (lol, nope)" Summer Thread

Just watched the extended highlights from their last match, and I can say Arsenal still look very consistent. They still excel at passing/ball movement, finishing, and the counter. But they are also very consistently garbage at goalkeeper, and the center half pairing. The keeping is just laughable, and the center halfs just are not getting it done.

That should change when Song and Cesc get into the rotation.

That is true, the traffic will certainly be flowing less and less down their throats.
But it just is so frustrating that Wenger didn't go out and get another stud CH to pair with Verm, knowing they are desperate at that spot.

possible momentum on picking up emir spahic
LINK
quote:
Montpellier fans are suggesting that Emir Spahic could have said his final goodbyes to the club after the defender refused to rule out leaving the Ligue 1 side last Wednesday.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has been heavily linked with a move for the 29-year-old, who has only spent one season at current club Montpellier.
The Bosnian international was the only Montpellier player who threw his shirt waved to the crowd after Thursday’s Europe League defeat to Györi ETO, prompting the club’s fans to question why their star man seemed to be saying his ‘farewells’.
An unofficial Montpellier site said:
“Is he really in contact with Arsenal? His lack of formal response to reports on Wednesday, as well as his gestures towards the crowd make his departure look inevitable. We’ll find out in the coming days what could be a big disaster for the Montpellier defence.”
Spahic missed Montpellier’s win over Bordeaux tonight due to suspension, with supporters suggesting that he may leave before their next game against Caen on the August 22nd.

still 2.5 weeks till the transfer window closes. plenty of time for something to happen, but I highly doubt any signings will take place between now and sunday.
anywho...
chamakh and arshavin in a bizarre nike ad
one of the more "respected journalists" for arsenal on twitter reports: @DarrenArsenal1 Can report that Song has been training at Colney all week, and has been part of awareness training with Frimpong
That would be great if ol Alley Song was fit for Sunday. It'd be an incredible defensive boost.
edit: god damnit, this is what I hate about twitter. now here's wenger saying denilson and diaby are the only guys who have a legit shot to return. i hate """twitter journalists""" -- LINK

I hate to be a debbie downer, but I have a hard time believing we win Sunday with all these players missing. Even if we had signed a quality CB and GK I'd still be nervous with the injuries. Now I'm resigned to the fact that we aren't going to win...

I'm a pessimistic lean as well. I guess the good things we have going for us are, 1, we always do well on opening day (meaningless historic stat, I know), 2, Liverpool I imagine still has some tweaks to work out under a new manager-to-player understanding of playing style, 3, arshavin, 4, torres isn't exactly coming into the season with blistering form, 5, their defense isn't the most spectacular (glass houses)
wouldn't be surprised to see 4 or more goals in this game.

Agreed.

Our only hope.
I guess we are allegedly getting Schwarzer. That's a meh signing. Would have much rather had Given, but I guess that didn't work out. It is beyond ridiculous that we haven't signed another CB. I'm speechless. I've always been a strong opponent of the "Wenger is killing us" sect, because I firmly believed in what his plan was for the team. This particular instance is ridiculous though. We have 3 CBs, two of which are wholly untested in the Premier League. Absolutely ridiculous.

I don't think Torres will be playing against us.. Call me delusional but I have a great feeling abt this game..
Up the Gunners!

It's not like they have the funding to get a youngish top class Keeper, they aren't too terribly expensive.
I have given up on signing a stud center half at this point. Which is ludicrous on Wenger's behalf.

Schwarzer isn't the best in the world but he is easily 10X better than anything Arsenal have currently. Him alone already makes them much better.
Now Wenger, time to step up and whip out your pocketbook and go get a stud center half!

jup, agreed
some good nega-news from hodgson himself:
LINK
quote:
"After seven training sessions with what I regard as the key players it is pretty obvious to all we are a long, long way from being a team like United, Arsenal or Chelsea who have been working under the same coach for at least a year," he said.
"I don't even pretend the team after six or seven training sessions are going to be anything like the team we want to be," added Hodgson ahead of Sunday's season-opener at home to Arsenal.
"It would be ridiculous to suggest we can be at the top of our game now in terms of how I want the team to play."

From Arsenal.com
quote:
Ahead of the curtain-raiser, Wenger's injury list was ill-defined. Nicklas Bendtner (groin), Johan Djourou (hamstring) and Aaron Ramsey (leg) are more than short-term absentees. Alex Song's calf problem is not serious but he may miss Sunday while Denilson (abdominal) only returned to training on Friday and faces a fitness test. Abou Diaby (calf) will also be checked late but should be OK. Robin van Persie and Cesc Fabregas are not injured but not match-fit. If they do travel, Wenger suggested they would be bit-part contributors at best.
However there is one area of clarity. Wenger told TV Online on Thursday that Laurent Koscielny would make his full Arsenal debut at centre half alongside Thomas Vermaelen. Though even the manager admitted it will be a tough baptism.
"I have spoken to Laurent and he will discover the Premier League on Sunday," said Wenger. "You can talk and talk but at the end of the day the players show what they can do on the pitch and he will have an opportunity to do that."
There is a possibility that Emmanuel Frimpong and England new boy Jack Wilshere might get the same chance. The duo impressed throughout pre-season and, unlike many of Wenger's other central midfield options, they are fully fit. The manager gave a snappy "yes" when asked if he'd be happy to throw them in. He then gave an almost puzzled "because they have quality" when asked why.
"I've not made up my mind," he went on. "But it's very difficult to talk about that because I do not want to give wrong hopes to players who read the newspapers.
"I have to balance the team, put in some experience and keep in mind that match fitness will be vital. So I cannot play three or four players who have not played one game since the start of the season. They will die after an hour and you can only change two or three."

Waiting here as well. I'm heading to The Londoner in a bit. Would like to see RVP in the starting XI, but I'm doubting it.
