Reading this article, and already I come across this little gem.

quote:

Arsenal already have enough talent to win the Premier League trophy that’s eluded them since 2004. Last year’s squad contained many top-class creative players such as Aaron Ramsey and Mesut Ozil and competent midfielders in Santi Cazorla and Mohamed Elneny, while Laurent Koscielny provided defensive consistency at the back. With such a talented team already, Arsenal’s main issue isn’t the players. It’s what their manager is asking them to do.

Maybe it's because I have a fondness for technical, short players, but I don't see how Santi isn't considered a top-class creative midfielder. In my view, he's some way ahead of Aaron, whose qualities are running, though he's a good passer as well. Santi is the lifeblood of team. He gets passed over for Spain and he gets overlooked when talking about the best players in the PL, but he has to be up there. He's probably the most technical player we've ever had, given his proficiency with both feet, his superb ball control, and his amazing dribbling.

He's right about the attacking spacing, and it kills me when we the offensive spacing should be obvious. There shouldn't be more than two players in a horizontal line, and there should always be a player in a vertical line from the ball carrier. Wenger wants free form attacking, but I think we'd be so much better if we had an attacking structure, even if it was a simple rule. We've experimented with a midfield rotation in the past when we employed 3 midfielders centrally, but we always struggled with that entry pass into the most dangerous zone of the field. We've instead relied on superb no.10's to create chances there rather than a disciplined approach. This is going to be the approach Wenger is going to have. I'd take it too, as long as we could have defensive spacing to go along with it.

But we don't... which is why teams like Liverpool put in 4 goals against us at home.

Before I even read your post, I was thinking I'd respond with a post about calling Santi simply competent is a huge insult. The skill that guy has with both feet is incredible.

At times we do. When Wenger gets desperate we look like a massively different team. Basically when we decide to defend as a team we do better overall. But this runs against what Wenger wants to do, thus we struggle in games we are supposed to win. I can guarantee that if the top four is in danger we will revert to a style that no one would describe as pretty.

Pretty sure he was 2nd to Ozil in the league in chances created before he got injured last season. The guy largely carried us for much of his first season.

He is also absolutely deadly on those free kicks that are just out of range for a shot.

I am a big fan of Rambo, but he just fluffs the simple stuff way too often and he seems to have issues positionally when he plays in midfield.

Yeah I missed the 'competent' descriptor re: Santi. That's off.

His FK in the 2014 FA Cup Final is one of the biggest goals in Arsenal history IMO. If we don't score there and then we don't win.

I have a good feeling about tomorrow. Time for some payback after that brutal Boxing Day match.

Yeah, I thought Ox was at best mediocre.

I really enjoyed the offense in the second half. The defense still looks a bit shaky. It seemed that Mustafi and Kos got up too much.

I'm slightly worried Kos and Mustafi will have a little Verm/Kos in them. By that I mean they both like to chase the ball a bit too much, and it leaves us exposed to plays like the one where Long missed the chip over Cech. Hopefully they can get it sorted with a few more reps under their belt. We looked dangerous overall though, just need to be a little cleaner in the box. Also love having either Coq or Xhaka in the DM role every game. Might be our strongest position in the two deep

I thought Mustafi was solid enough. Perez didn't really get service but he may take a few games to get used to the league. I thought this may be the season that Santi would start to be phased out. I couldn't have been more wrong. He has been brilliant the last two matches.
