I was listening to The Football Ramble, and they were talking about the idea of us moving to a more free flowing Barcelona esque midfield, and how much they loved the idea but how we weren't doing it. And they also said we should play Ozil as a 10. I was banging my head...Barcelona doesn't play a 10. We're trying to play Ozil in that inside left Iniesta role, but he's not that player.

4-2-3-1 is the perfect shape for this group.

that sucks for him. he's a fantastic player. hope his fitness turns around soon.

i think i'm resigned to the fact we're going to keep this 4-1-4-1/4-3-3 all season. and the khedira link makes sense now. @culanndavies has posited, and i think it's pretty sound, that we've switched to this formation precisely because of our issues against top sides last season. will be really interested to see how it works saturday.

How is a 4-3-3 going to help us against the other top teams?

strengthens us defensively (hypothetically). in essence, arteta/flamini were playing as the lone DM in our 4-2-3-1 (which frequently looked like a 4-4-2 last season). in this year's iteration, the wing players both have the same defensive responsibilities as they did last season but jack and rambo both press better and get back defensively, whereas last season it was just rambo handling the defensive load while ozil stayed up the pitch.

i think it could turn out better if it continues to mesh, but i still don't think it's the best use of the talents at our disposal. if ozil is supposed to be our cornerstone, we should play him centrally.

If we insist on playing Ozil wide then we should have just bought Cesc.

Y'all had to make a decision for now and so did Arsenal. Hope he does well and I'm sure y'all will start clicking soon. Di Maria is going to be a great buy.

Such a composed finish, Henry-esque. No, I am not saying he's the next Henry.

Love it. Wilshere, Ox, Rocisky, Per, Giroud, Poldi, Santi and Flamini as subs. Pretty damn strong side.

Sad part is we say this shite every season yet never have all of our players available. I think we can have a strong side, we just never do for a full season.

Jack also played essentially the bottom of a midfield diamond yesterday and looked really good, I thought, for 72 minutes. I only watched the second half, TBF.

i'm cool with judging his effort based on 27 mins, if it was a positive assessment

still think he needs to pass the ball more quickly. he always holds onto the ball a second longer than he needs to (which is one reason he always gets fouled).

@arsenalcolumn criticized his refusal to drop between the 2 CBs in that role because he's afraid of losing the ball with his back facing goal. interesting though. i guess it's true he never does that. would might him picking up that position at all.

I would love to see Jack converted to a DLP. He loves to tackle (albeit a bit recklessly), is good on the ball, and is generally an intelligent player. He has a bad injury history so I think DLP would be safer for him than as an attacking player. Plus if he sits in front of the CBs and recycles possession for us I think he will be a bigger asset to the team, given our myriad other attacking options.
