So now The Mail is reporting, without sources, that Wenger is keen to give Wilshere the keys Arteta's had as the deep lying mid.

Of course, we know Arsene sees Wilshere's future as a holding mid, but that future could be now.

Here's the Bleacher Report writeup on it, which obvious flaws aside ("Flamini often"), brings up the discussion of Jack taking over for Arteta.

The best part I read was from the comments, actually.

I think we should try and turn Wilshere into the kind of player Modric has become for Real Madrid. He isn't an attacking midfielder as he was at Tottenham, but now, not only is he able to sit back and defend efficiently, but he can also dictate the play, or carry the ball from deep areas of the pitch and run past players. Very few midfielders are able to do that but I'm sure Wilshere can definitely fit that mold.

Modric is an interesting comparison, though I haven't seen him enough to know if it has legs.

I kind of think it is an apt comparison. Modric will have to be deeper for Real with the addition of James. Modric has been a big player since Euro 2008. He was fantastic and his coming out party, much like Brasil was for James.

Arsene Wenger and Ivan Gazidis: On Gedion Zelalem and all things Arsenal

By Jeff Bradley (Bob's brother/Michael's uncle)

LINK

Alll in all a terrific interview, with tons of info on the club. Some Zelalem stuff:
quote:

Gazidis: I don't know. If you speak to Gedion, it sounds like you're speaking to an American. And, certainly, when we found him, he was living in D.C. and thinking of himself as a young U.S. kid. But I don't know, that's a decision he has to make.

Wenger: He feels American. But who will he choose? I don't know. He's a product of modern society. More and more players, like him, have three national teams and have to choose one. Look at Algeria's World Cup team, 17 of 23 players were born in France.

Wilshire becoming a Modric-type player would be a dream come true... but I think it's feasible. A DLP with the skills of a playmaker is a pretty deadly combination. Marco Verrati at PSG is the same way. Plus this would help with his injury history since it would be him making the tackles rather than taking the tackles more often than not.

When Jack first broke through I made this comparison. Luka hadn't reached the heights he has with Real, but Jack has it in him to be a player like Luka. He just has to be smarter with the ball, and drive less toward goal, and use his dribbling ability to make space for himself.

Its most likely med student syndrome, and I know what you mean.

Ankylosing spondylitis causes an inflammatory back pain. Meaning starts before 40, worse in the AM, improved with activity, not improved with rest and occurs daily. This is opposed to mechanical back pain which most of us get from time to time. Next you would need some imaging of your low back and pelvis and possibly a blood test or two.

Again, I'm sure you're just fine, but I'm happy to help if I can.

Eta: sorry for hijacking the thread. Go Gunners!

I've got the vague, achy back pain that doesn't bother me as long as I'm moving but I wake up pretty stiff, a history of allergies/atopic issues, really bad achilles tendonitis, gastritis, and even (relatively) low O2 sats (around 94 the last time I took it on room air). I would be lying if I said I didn't look some of this up in UpToDate, but I came across it studying for STEP and kind of had a "holy shite this would explain everything" moment. Plus I started feeling this vague back pain issue around the time it would normally present in a caucasian male. I realize it's probably a lot of coincidence (since it's really only a small % of the population that gets this), but it's something that's stayed in the back of my mind.

I have this condition where my pants get really tight sometimes.

It typically only occurs when Aaron Ramsey touches the ball.

So who are we linked with at CB? I really wanted Ginter, but I imagine we will get an older CB to deputize until we get the situation figured out.

In terms of long-term options, I actually wouldn't mind John Anthony Brooks. For a big man, he's actually decent on the ball, and as we've seen with Mertesacker, technical skill can improve once you are immersed in the possession game. If Brooks has a good season I could see him as a long term option for a bigger club, though who knows if he will reach the level Wenger requires. I imagine Wenger will give Hayden every opportunity to make an impression before going out and buying someone.

I really wish we would get the DM sorted soon. Since it looks like we aren't getting Khedira, the current targets seem to be Carvalho and Schneiderlin, and I would take either. We desperately need to strengthen there, as Arteta and Flamini are not enough to counteract our inherent imbalance, namely, deploying Mertesacker as the stopper, and Koscielny as the covering defender. Hopefully we will get that situation sorted. Perhaps some combination of Olsson, Hayden, Toral, or Zelalem can step up and help us here. That would be my only conclusion if Wenger doesn't buy someone this window.

I am also wondering if there is a loan on the cards for Sanogo and Gnabry. Both didn't make the trip to the U.S., so one has to think that they are either injured or something else is on the cards.

A loan would do both a world of good. Gnabry is a fantastic prospect, strong, a good dribbler, but he needs to adapt his game so that he is not always asking for the ball to his feet. If he used his athleticism to make more off the ball runs in the period he deputized for our injured wingers, I think he would have played more.

A loan, or a consistent run of games, is what Sanago needs. He has all the things you want in a striker, but he lacks concentration. You can see he has the same ability to make flicks, and participate in the build-up as Giroud, but he is much more athletic. Obviously he isn't as good as Giroud at the build-up play, or anything other than running beyond the defense, but if he puts it together he could be the rare target striker who can actually play both with his back to goal and with the ball at his feet. His movement off the ball is very natural, and he does good work at creating triangles, and unlike Giroud, he moves toward the goal at speed once he draws the CB out of position. He reminds me of Bendnter, in that both were clumsy, but they both have great positional sense. Bendnter always was in the right position, but he could never finish, and if Sanago doesn't improve his concentration and finishing, he will be frozen out just like Bendnter was.

So, there's actually some smoke to the Baloteli rumors. Apparently AC Milan want 10 million + Cambell for Balo. This is from Italian paper Tuttosport, and a couple of English papers are saying the same thing.

I'd be fine with it, I think, though I'm still hoping we go after a CB. And I know Arsene says no more forwards, but it'd be tough to pass on a talent like Mario.

Apparently Barca and United are fighting for Vermaelen, but we can't sell him unless there's someone else coming, and if we do sell him, I think we need to buy two CBs anyway. We don't have nearly enough cover there.

I straight up do not want Balotelli. At the same time, if there is anyone who can curb his antics, it is probably Wenger, though I'm skeptical. Campbell is much more versatile and I'd rather we keep him and deploy him as the deputy striker/winger whenever we have injuries to starters.

It would be hilarious if we got +10mil for TV5, as he is still woeful in his positioning. It's like he's never learned to recover after attempting to stop the play, nor has he learned when he should press high, and when to stay back. The fact that he prefers to stop makes him a terrible partner for Mertesacker, who has no ability as the covering defender. In a perfect world, he should be the perfect partner for Koscielny, but TV5 often leaves Koscielny out to dry with poor positioning.

I still think we need two CBs, or at least someone who can cover there. I'm really nervous about that position more than anywhere else.

maybe we need a more selfish striker, but balo rarely impresses me with his all-around play. maybe AW could do something there, but I'd be surprised if we made that move. I really think he intends to start Sanchez centrally a lot. I'd also be kinda surprised if Campbell stuck around. we've got a lot of numbers up there. he'll have his chance to show his worth though. hopefully he does well.

agreed on gnabry and sanogo. if we keep Campbell, gnabry really needs a loan. Everton would be pretty great IMO. would like to see him go to a good footballing team.

we have to bring in an experienced CB in if we sell TV5. really wouldn't mind nabbing smalling or Jones in exchange for tv5. I'm not sure who we're targeting (though I'm sure we're targeting a young, talented CB). giminez?

not getting ginter was a mistake.

More upside, to me, more technical. Weren't Arsenal linked with him before his move to United?

Can cover as RB or DM.

Would like either of those.

I wouldn't mind having another central option to Giroud where we can keep Theo and Alexis wide still. Just not sure Mario is worth the trouble. Might be more of a Milan-pushed move than the other way around.

I don't think arsene wants them to play on the wings together. I don't think either is near their best on the left wing. we'll see though.

Theo is actually pretty decent on the LW, as he loves getting on his right foot and shooting. He's scored quite a few goals from the inverted wing position.
