Big book out few years ago based upon “money ball” type analysis of soccer that concluded that most important players on team were your worse players. Team with best “worse players” had a big advantage so you were better off to spend 20 million a head to improve 3 players than 60 million to get one striker. This is due to fact that so many games are won when marginal player makes mistake versus top player making incredible play. With that said, please tell me we have made moves or will be making moves to improve our back line because that defense was terrible last year

Well we signed Sokratis and lichtsteiner who are both experienced and competent, but oldish and have pretty much hit their ceiling.

I just don’t see the defense improving much this year. Mustafi is not good and Sokratis needs an athletic partner at center back. Bellerin seems to have regressed the last 2 seasons. Can Chambers, Holding or another youngster step up is the question.

Unfortunately I'm in agreement. Hope to be proven wrong.

Sokratis playing next to Kola scares the hell out of me. Them boys are thicc. Hoping Chambers gets his shot when Mustafi fricks up.

Monreal will be first choice left back. I'm with you on Chambers. I'd start him now over Mustafi. Chambers may make mistakes too but at least he can improve and learn from them.

Chambers has the ability to be a first choice CB at the start of the season until Koscielny comes back. Holding has good technique for a CB, he's faster then all other CB's we have but unfortunately, he's a big flop. The guy almost never tackles. Every fricking player gets pass him because of that. He must learn how to tackle if he wants to be a starter. I think at the start of the season, Emery has to rotate between Sokratis, Mustafi, Chambers and Mavropanos in order to see who has the potential to be in the first 11.

I love how sturdy we are tactically now. Granted, we aren’t perfect and it will take a while to completely purge the Wenger laziness, but the pressing has been phenomenal for preseason.
Really impressed and I love how Emery isn’t afraid to change formations based on the opponents to give us the best chance of winning.

Can we get the t removed from title of the thread? I don't know about everyone else, but I'm not able to locate our thread as easily with it in front of the A.

Done. And just like that Kola out 8-10 weeks (knee) with the injury from the Chelsea game. That’s already a position of low depth. Ready to see AMN step up tho.

Thanks, Braud. I don't know if anyone on this board will be considerably upset about the Kola news.

I mean, Kola could be a great LB, but he has to start saying narrow and stop pressing the ball in high and wide areas. Our big problem has been spacing and he has to realize that no one is going to hurt us 40 yards from goal. It's better to stay near his CB partner and let the winger come back and deal with the RB. With Monreal aging, we need to buy a good LB or hope Kola develops on the defensive end.

Nice counter attacking goal. We have looked deadly on the counter this preseason.

Another good half from Chambers. Give me Chambers/Sokratis as the starters. I know Sokratis isn't the quickest but Mertesacker wasnt either and he was more than effective for us. Plus I rather not partner Chambers with the ticking time bomb that is Mustafi. Iwobi has looked lively also.

Maitland-Niles impressing at left back again.

Am i the only one not impressed with the game today? I mean Lazio had far better goal opportunities then Arsenal. The first goal we scored was from an offside position and the second was reflected. Since Emery came all i see is a boring football. I hope that will change, otherwise Arsenal will struggle this season. Mark my words!

We've been playing boring football since Sanchez came for the most part.
