I don’t see how any player can turn that down. The saudis have a bottomless pit of money, but I can see them taking all the top marketable players

Are their games available to watch anywhere?

Seen this already somewhat in China a few years back. The Saudi league will continue to attract big names towards the end of their careers and some others whom are financially motivated.

Nobody in their peak with any sporting ambition will go there to play as is.

Just a few other reasons if I had to guess as well -

- Quality of play is poor
- Football tradition is poor
- Saudi Culture is likely shite compared to what many top players will want to deal with

What slowed China down IIRC is the Chinese government taxed the clubs by a 1:1 ratio on all transfer fees. Clubs spending $30 million on a transfer fee then had to pay $30 million to the government.

But for $400 million over two years I could do it. shite, my dad did it for much less when I was a kid. Not the soccer thing, but the middle eastern thing.

They've allegedly set aside 20 billion for this.

They can buy all of the players they want. Nobody will care about their league.

In the end, people support and follow the clubs, not the players.

Saudi does have endless cash, but I don’t think even they will spend money if they don’t think the investment isn’t working out as intended - see LIV merging with PGA 2 years in.

The one thing the Saudis have over China If their domestic league is their priority is the time zone makes it a lot more friendlier to European audiences than China.

But I don't see this as a threat at all, could it be a prelude to an IPL style tournament though? That would be the way I would go if I were them

Ngoako Kante, who is past it and can’t stay healthy just signed a 100 million per year contract….that’s money even NBA players could only dream of signing for.

I don’t know if anyone here has visited Saudi Arabia, but it is a lot closer to Dubai versus what image people have of it in their head. No crime, warm sunny weather….expect to start seeing top players like mbappe signing there soon

It's old dudes that ran out of a contract. Who cares? A lot of people want to see well past their prime Ronaldo and Messi not play defense. Not me.

I would rather 50 million and live in Stoke than 400 million and live in Saudi Arabia of all places.

I guess it is kind of cool that the Saudi's are soccer fanatics to the point of setting aside $20B for their league.
