we're talking about international fame, not quality of play

Pretty telling when a billionaire chooses to run a club where he can't invest his own money and has to run for reelection

i think AC is bigger than Juve but they just suck now and are in a transition period until berlesconi figures out what he's going to do

Nope Juve is and has always been the biggest club in Italy in terms of brand and popularity.

It's why they are hated so much bc they have so many fans not from Turin

I found this interesting. (The citations are to a pair of studies used in Italian articles.)

quote:

As of 2010, Milan is the third most supported team in Italy, and the seventh most supported team in Europe, ahead of any other Italian team.

So, on an international scale, Milan is probably bigger than Juve... but Juve is the bigger one in Italy.

that sounds about right

i almost posted about the scudetto v. europe angle but i would have to go look it up. juve is all about winning serie a for sure

AC was a major international brand until berlesconi stopped funding the wages and they fell off and tried to redo how they build

i mean they signed Ronaldinhio when he was at/near his peak. when was the last time juve signed a world class player?

...other than pogba, of course

to the german club fans and those in germany.

i was playing with tsv 1860 in fm, and it said that Bayern was the ownership group of the club? Same board or same ownership/board?

It's a little complex...will try to explain, though I might be missing some details.

Bayern bailed out 1860 with millions of dollars when the club couldn't pay its expenses a few years ago (it also was to Bayern's advantage because it would have broken a contract with Allianz Arena, which would have cost Bayern a ton of money).

A single investor came in and bought a majority of the club's shares....but under German rules, the club must own 50+1 percent, so that single investor can't be called the "ownership group".

Still not sure why Bayern would be considered the ownership group, but perhaps because they are the club with the most investment?

This gets even trickier with clubs like Wolfsburg, Leverkusen and RB Leipzig, since companies are a part of the club.

AC Milan is in that top tier with Real, Barca and ManU if you're basing on international fame / brand.

Juve is very popular among Italians (due some to glory hunting but also to everyone from the south having family that moved to Torino for factory work) and popular in the Italian diaspora (USA, Australia, Canada etc).

However, AC Milan is the more famous / bigger club internationally by some distance.

They've been mediocre for years now and you'll still see more people with their gear and shops displaying it when traveling through the US, South America, Japan than every European club aside from Real, Barca and ManU combined. . . (unless it's Juve gear in New Jersey).

That's what I would tend to think, as well.. 7 European cups and that 20 year run from the late 80's to the late 00's where they had some of the worlds biggest stars..

I tend to think Inter may be bigger globally than Juve (but that's based purely on personal perception and not any fact)..

Obviously, Juve has had the most recent success on the big European stage..

Yeah, I think Inter at least larger globally in terms of a much more diffuse following.

If Juve is close in sheer numbers, it would be due to the high percentage of fanship among people with Italian heritage in concentrated areas of USA, Australia and Canada.

When I went and watched Inter play United in DC a couple of summers ago, I was impressed by the large amount of Inter supporters there.

Yeah, Inter has a pretty massive global fan base built over the years by having so many international stars.

When they've play around NY, it's been interesting to see how many Brazilian and Argentinian fans they bring out from the large communities here. The really are Internazionale.

Napoli has a surprisingly large international fan base in the Italian diaspora.

All four of those Italian clubs (AC Milan, Inter, Juve and Napoli) completely dwarf AS Roma and it would take Roma decades of beating the top three to begin to bridge the gap even if the "reddit scudetti" and US TV coverage would be 90% Roma within only a couple of years.

Much you see in these threads is just so heavily influenced by US TV coverage and English language internet interest in the past five years.

AC Milan not in the "top tier" of international fanship but Bayern is?

I hate AC Milan (mainly because they are in that tier) but that's crazy. Go to a soccer shop in the US, Brazil, Japan, Morocco and see how many AC Milan jerseys they have for a club that's been garbage for almost a decade.

Certainly, another decade of mediocre results and that will start to decrease.

The only other clubs that could be that crappy for that long and still that popular would be Real, ManU and Barca (Barca has been much more a question mark in this group than AC Milan, though Messi has changed that for at least a generation).
