i always enjoy hearing the argument for how landon is NOT easily the best player ever. it's always interesting and it ALWAYS relies incredibly heavily on club performance in europe like that somehow matters in regards to national team performance

He was our best player as a 20 year old when we made our best tournament run ever, and single-handedly put the team on his back in 2010, the only time we ever won our group.

Right now, he is the best USMNT player of all-time and it's not even remotely close.

Selling out to Mexico aside, Donovan is our best player and it's not close.

He leads in total goals, total assists and total World Cup goals

So half of the positions on the field can never be considered the best player? This is the same problem that the Ballon d'Or, and other awards have fallen into.

And isn't Dempsey tied with Donovan for total goals?

Yep, but you'd have to multiply his assists by 5 to catch Donovan in that category.

Donovan was all around a better player. Yes, that includes Reyna, Stewart, Wynalda, etc.

I got excited reading your post, then I realized I will be 39. I'm not excited anymore.

I looked at predictions for who we would have starting in this WC, and some of the names haven't seen playing time in ages.

It would be interesting to do the same thing for 2022.

I'll be a year away from 40. I'm just getting used to not being in my 20s anymore.

I'll be 38 and I'm stoked. 8 more years to accrue leave time and money? Hell yeah.

If I was to make a prediction in 2015, I would have gone with something like this

GK: Howard (Guzan and Bill Hamid)
LB: Fabian Johnson (Lichaj)
RB: Yedlin (Chandler)
CD: Brooks (Besler)
CD: Cameron (Omar Gonzalez)
DM: Danny Williams (Jermaine Jones)
CM: Bradley (Nagbe once we knew he would become a citizen)
CM: Kljestan (Mix, maybe Jose Torres as a sleeper)
RM: Bedoya (Zardes)
LM: Dempsey (Brek Shea)
CF: Jozy (Bobby Wood and Aron Johannson)

That's not a ridiculous line-up compared to reality. Pulisic was the only guy to come out of nowhere.

And Mix, Brek Shea and Aron Johannson were the only guys to totally fall out of the picture. And the latter was only due to injury.

I want Konrad De La Fuente to pan out so bad ahead of 2022.

I’m definitely excited for the future. If most of these kids pan out, we should have a good team in 4 years, and potentially a great one when we host in 8 years. Some of the kids that will make the 2022 roster are probably just barely starting their careers right now, so it’s tough to project that. Some of the kids that will make the 2026 team, no one has even heard of yet.

Our great 2002 team was a nice mix of youth and experience, and that team had great chemistry. Hoping 2022 will be like that.

By biggest concern is depth at forward. We badly need Sargent and other young forwards to develop and push for minutes. Our current three options (Jozy, Bobby, and Morris) are good players, but very streaky and injury-prone. We don’t want to have limited options up top. I have high hopes for Sargent. There’s good reason all the big Bundesliga teams were hungry to sign him.

This was actually your prediction from 2014.

quote:

GK: Guzan
RB: Tough one. Cameron will be too slow for this, Chandler has no IQ for the position, and I want Fabian at LB. Maybe Spector will finally fulfill the promise of three outstanding EPL weeks in a row?
CB1: Besler
CB2: Brooks or Cameron
LB: Fabian Johnson
CDM: Bradley
CM: Luis Gil
CM: Mix
AM/Winger: Aron Johannsson
AM/Winger: Yedlin or Darlington Nagbe
Striker: Jozy

So that's pretty close to what you said.

We say this about the next World Cup at the end of every World Cup.

Remember how hyped we were about Mix taking over in the midfield around this time four year ago?

Remember when Luis Gil was a thing?

Man, Luis Gil flopped so damn hard. He barely gets minutes in MLS anymore. Six years ago some big teams were looking to sign him. Sadly, he never really progressed from where he was as a teenager. Juan Agudelo has also been disappointing. He’ll do something amazing like once every ten games to remind you of his crazy talent, then be invisible the rest of the time.

Hopefully, these kids fare better than those two.

How did you search that? Yeah, that's not absurd. Just like my list of 10 guys in this thread probably won't look too bad in 2022.

The place where it's tough is to predict new faces. If we have more Luis Gils and fewer Weston McKinnies, then 2022 qualification will be tougher than anticipated.

I actually have that 2018 thread bookmarked. Mine has a couple outliers as well. Terrance Boyd was on my list

Can you link it, please?

I'm not sure if I made a prediction or not. I think I went with a 3-5-2 lineup.
