Correction, I misspoke.
The laws banning opposition parties were just made, not elections. In 2022 law was passed that states any party that questions the government’s execution or performance of war is banned.
Elections are not allowed while martial law is in effect. That has been the case for many years, a long time in fact. Martial law has to be extended every so often, I’m not sure how often. While suspending elections during war time is conceivably understandable, this is a problem because the government in power could simply continue extending martial law, thereby rendering themselves unaccountable.
The US government could do this after 9/11, for example. Or a pandemic. It’s undemocratic.
But Ukraine has never really been democratic.

Sticking strictly to Ukraine since martial laws differ from country to country. In Ukraine elections are not allowed to be held under martial law. Martial law in Ukraine can only last 90 days without the Rada approving an extension. Martial law was declared by Zelensky in Feb 2022 and approved by the Rada. The Rada has then been extending the marital law every 90 days. The basis for the martial law decree can also be challenged in court by any citizen. If the basis is found not to meet the threshold for marital law then the martial law decree is null and void. Obviously there are a few holes in this since Ukraine's Rada just requires a simple majority to extend the martial law and Ukraine's courts have a reputation of corruption. However, the threat to Ukraine requiring martial law is real and ongoing so problems you mention are not a problem yet. They would only be a problem after peace.
