It would be a vote to "succeed" because California by itself would be very successful. I'd live in an independent California in a second.
Good bye movie industry, good bye tech. It would be a big loss for the U.S.
California, with their love of paying for non-producers, would be facing bankruptcy in no time. Then they'll eagerly raise taxes on the tech and movie industries, and their 1%ers, to make up the difference, forcing those industries and folks out of state.
They would be self-imposing Cloward-Piven.

Let's see how well they do without water from the Colorado River and power from the Hoover dam.

Well, that's before you have the entirety of the US boycotting any product or service coming out of California.

If this makes it onto a ballot and passes, here's what will happen:
1. More liberals will make plans to move there.
2. The federal government will say "no, you are not leaving".
3. Liberals will kick and scream and hold more riots in California.
4. More businesses will move out of California.

So let me get this straight, on that day, every single cent of our federal dollars will stop being sent there?
YES!
And we won't have to build that section of the wall protecting them from illegals?
YES
Seriously, it would take a week for every single person there to die

How does this work? They are broke and dependent on federal funds. They'll have to drill off their coastline for revenue and you know that ain't happening.

What would be really hilarious is when they pay there federal income taxes and the refunds never come back.

It's a strategy to collapse the government by over-demand of welfare and social services creating a situation where it is impossible to meet the demand and then revolution commences.
(or something like that)

For starters, how many Californians enlist in the military every year? Those are jobs that will be lost.

Best case scenario:
A successful California exit starts a snowball leading to a redefining of the role of the federal and state governments. Ideally all 50 states gain a significant level of autonomy and the national government's central role is shifted to being the facilitation of citizen relocation between states (behind national defense). Let each state develop their own law and culture identities, make it as easy as possible for citizens to choose what state they want to live in, and let competition between the states be the driving force of our political system
