Not exactly. They made posts with left-leaning keywords but also nazi pictures (it's far easier for the algorithms to parse words than pictures), so the ads appeared because of the left-leaning keywords. They then took the left-leaning keywords out, leaving only the nazi pics, then took the pictures of that and claimed this was the norm at X/Twitter. It's so far from the norm that the only account that ever saw it was MM's own account.
It's so fraudulent it reaches into the realm of libel (once they published their piece on it).
***EDIT*** This was wrong, they did not edit text out of their posts (at least not according to the lawsuit) but rather went to even further extremes in order to create a feed no one saw (but themselves), then portray it as a normal occurrence rather than a purposely fabricated event (see: NBC News exploding GMC trucks in the early 90s).

Apparently, I was wrong.
The lawsuit.
Here's the steps MM used as outlined in the lawsuit:
1. Used accounts they had created at least 30 days prior in order to bypass X's ad filter for new users.
2. Followed only a very small subset of users which consisted entirely of accounts in only two categories:
....2a. those known to produce extreme, fringe content
....2b. accounts run by X's big-name advertisers
This ended up creating a feed for the account which could, hopefully (in MM's eyes) produce a feed designed for the sole purpose of producing side-by-side ad/content placements just so they could screenshot it in an attempt to alienate advertisers.
That didn't seem to be enough to hit their goal so they:
3. resorted to endlessly scrolling and refreshing their hand-selected feed to generate between 13 and 15 times more advertisements per hour than viewed by the average user
4. MM then ran their story without mentioning that they did any manipulation at all to achieve their results (and especially not mentioning the extraordinary lengths they went to in order to accomplish this).
This is absolutely no different than when NBC did a story in 1993 about GNC trucks exploding in wrecks because of fuel tank placement. They did a piece on it showing a truck exploding from such a wreck... but failed to disclose that the explosion really happened because... wait for it... they put incendiary devices in the gas tank so it would purposely explode upon being impacted.
NBC News ended up making a public apology to GMC and paid them over $100M as part of their settlement. I doubt Elon lets MM off so lightly.
