That first part doesn't seem problematic. They were merely trying to vaccinate the bats for coronaviruses that can infect humans. The spike proteins themselves can't create viruses.
The second part seems troubling.

Science created the vaccine that eases the symptoms.
But have fun being a moron.
Only a few million people died before the vaccine was available. If science caused this outbreak I don't see the net benefit.
If I take a hammer to your windshield and also own a windshield repair company I could help solve the problem I created for you. But did you receive a net benefit from my actions? Of course not.

It means it has to be factored into the relative good that science does. And to realize that without this misguided niche of science, Covid wouldn’t have happened.
A powerful tool can be good or evil. Financing gain of function research was banned here in the US so Fauci and friends helped finance it in Wuhan. It was banned here because wiser people found it to be way too dangerous.

We've lived almost 80 years under the threat of nuclear annihilation. Fortunately, it is still extremely hard for non-governmental groups to create weapons grade material.
Unfortunately, these biotech advances are getting easier and easier. While they have the potential to be used for good, they can also be misused - either intentionally or accidentally.
Science has had a dramatic improvement over our lives going back several hundred years but we may be reaching a tipping point where science has advanced so far that we end up killing ourselves.
I used to think that that would happen first with nuclear war but now I think it will be via biological warfare.
I do think Peter Daszak needs to answer questions in front of committees. It might be that this work was not pursued after DARPA refused to fund it but he needs to state this under oath.

I know Fauci has become the scapegoat of the right but there is absolutely no evidence that the CDC funded gain of function work in Wuhan.
Could money have been secretly redirected, sure. But the CDC did not and would not have authorized that.
Clearly DARPA specifically rejected funding this particular gain of function work.

weaponized designer diseases are the future of warfare if China is allowed to stay on track.
Imagine if this had been a truly highly deadly virus...
Not that COVID hasn't been deadly, but a 99.5%+ survival rate is honestly not too much worse than the flu.
Now, Imagine if the virus claimed 10-30% of lives it infected, or more... this was a trial run in my opinion- a study to monitor the efficacy of the viral delivery system and the rate of spread. Wait, just wait, until they really aim to kill us...

Board change bump. This should be one of the biggest stories of the year
