And, they got a taste of how expensive the upkeep on the vehicles, the replacement parts like tires and stuff, and decided "we're good".

A fleet of patrol cars is hard enough on a department budget that needs increased staffing, increased pay ofr existing staff, etc., now throwing a bunch of high dollar single purpose vehicles and equipment really shows to be poor management of budgets.

you feel this way until it's you or your loved ones that they show the force to. You fully support the police showing force in the projects and ghettos but if they "big boy" your mother or wife you would be all up in arms over it.

Once you see this in your rear-view for rolling thru a stop sign you'll be the first to bitch and moan

I'm OK with LE having one or two armored vehicles for those rare times when they need to bring people in close because of UXO or something along those lines.

Makes me laugh though when I see them try to talk all tactical and shite and then they want to come riding on an armored vehicle like it's a garbage truck. If they were actually rolling into a no-shite bad situation, the bad guy would just hurl some lead at one of them, knowing at least two more of them will have to jump off to deal with that and it would completely halt their movement.

That said, I'm pretty much of the opinion that LEO should carry a rifle with a red dot optic. Apparently they are so scared for their lives, and get so tunnel-visioned when they draw the sidearm and have to focus narrowly on that sight picture, their ability to determine shoot/no-shoot is severely degraded. With red dot optics they can keep both eyes open.

This is a good thing. Give police forces military equipment and they think they need to act like the military.

Iraq and Afghanistan are probably safer than Compton, NOLA, and ChiRaq.

Well, if you're driving a tank down the interstate without a license, I would think it would look bad too.

"Sorry officer, was I speeding?"
"No.. but you did crush three Priuses. I'll have to give you a citation."

Sounds like they're just planning on increasing those civil forfeitures of innocent civilians.

Oh, so this is one of those weird times where people criticize people for doing what they want?

With all the outrage of the national guard at the border and talk of it violating the Posse Comitatus Act,
I'm finding it hard to distinguish cops from military troops anyway because of the way they are equipped now.

Most Cops do not have the appropriate training to be in full tacticool gear and carrying ARs. MOST

Not a cop but from my friends in LE talking they need to be spending that money on upgraded body armor, more extensive range training with handguns and salaries.

They have this gear in my hometown.

The odds of being a victim of a violent crime here are 1 in 554. Of the 44 violent crimes, 2 were murder. I'm not sure a fully armored vehicle and armed SWAT team are necessary for a location that has cops sitting around bored.

Exactly It's not like the police will use a No Knock warrant with full on smoke bombs and flash grenades and enter a private residence after some dude bought 50$ of meth at the house.

Oh wait

LINK

quote:

“There’s a real misimpression by the public that aggressive police actions are only used against hardened criminals,” said Cary J. Hansel, a Baltimore lawyer who has represented plaintiffs in such lawsuits. “But there are dozens and dozens of cases where a no-knock warrant is used against somebody who’s totally innocent.”

At least seven of the federal lawsuits have been settled for more than $1 million in the last five years. They include a $3.75 million payment in 2016 to the family of Eurie Stamps, the unarmed Framingham grandfather who was accidentally shot while compliant and on his stomach; and $3.4 million in 2013 to the family of Jose Guereña, a 26-year-old former Marine shot more than 20 times as agents broke into his house in Tucson. No drugs were found.

In each of those cases, as in almost all botched raids, prosecutors declined to press charges against the officers involved.

I'm not suggesting that LE start getting MRAPs but I'd prefer this excess military equipment go to LE vs. being sold to terrorists or just rotting away.
