They've always played stupid games to get what they want. The problem is they're now getting the technology. Not saying it's the greatest, but I also don't see sanctions going away.
It's the question of what his advisors are telling him. I would think these are older close family members that know it is stupid, but he's young, and ignorant. I also believe that he thinks China would come to help them.
It's a shitty situation, but it's eventually going to be him or someone else.
Keep in mind that he probably believes his regime can defeat America. That's what I'm most afraid of.

Admiral Mullen, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs said Sunday that China would have to resolve all this nuttiness and that is probably what is happening.
